In less than a week, Captain America: Civil War will officially usher in summer movie season as it opens in domestic theaters. But internationally, Marvel’s latest blockbuster is already off to a stellar start, raking in an estimated $200.2 million for the weekend.
As a result, Civil War now stands as the 14th biggest international opening of all time, and its enormous international haul is just shy of what Avengers: Age of Ultron did last year, when it opened to $201.2 million internationally. Age of Ultron then went on to earn a domestic debut of $191.3 million, and early box office predictions suggest that Civil War could do the same next week.
Age of Ultron currently stands as the highest-grossing international superhero movie of all time, with an international total of $946.4 million. According to Disney estimates, Civil War is pacing only 5 percent behind Age of Ultron, and it’s 26 percent ahead of both Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, as well as 157 percent ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
So far, Civil War has opened in 37 territories including the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, and more, and it was the No. 1 movie in all territories where it opened, with the exception of Japan. It also set an all-time opening record in Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.
Civil War’s international success marks yet another win for Disney, who’ve been on a hot streak with Zootopia and The Jungle Book. The live action Jungle Book has raked in $252.1 million domestically and $684.8 million worldwide, while Zootopia boasts $323.5 million domestically and $931.4 million worldwide (making it the biggest international and global release of 2016).
Over the next week, Civil War will open in North America and other remaining territories like China, Italy, and Russia.
