I have been speaking to a girl from USA she lives in Virginia, she has made it clear from the start she is not prepared to live in UK and if I wish to make it work I must relocate to USA.

Can you dear chaps advice me about job opportunities and living there? as I do not have a US degree and she has a high status job. She is already asking me how much savings I have etc :( It's a big move and I need to think it through.

Please brothers and sisters help Dr Gupta :-)

Kind regards,

Dr A.J Gupta

Doctors make huge amount of money in the US compared to UK. I have been to Virginia it is nice to live and work. Take a flight across the pond and check it out yourself.

Sorry Bro I should have made it clear from the start I am not a Dr in the medical sense but I completed a PHD in History. I do not have much savings as I went backpacking to South America and spent much there :frown: I have to ask my family to help but my sister is also getting hitched and there is much expense there also.

Is that girls name SvenSvensonov:lol:.?

Seriously though, in Virginia (D.C. and Maryland too as Virginians commute to those regions for work as well) you'll be competing against government, ex-military and current personal and military contractors for jobs as well as a young, educated population, it's a competitive market especially for those without proper credentials. I work with an individual who lives in Virginia (see the name above) who works in the biotech industry for the US government, it's not an easy market to crack.

General info on the regional job's market:

Virginia is well above average in college grads in the US, which bolsters your competition:

And here's a breakdown of Virginia's jobs market - by industry:

She works for Deloitte and I am just a research assistant at University, I am not a material person but she is about status.

Give me a minute, I'll give you some figures and stats.

Plus I have no US qualifications and if I marry I will get resident status first? before citizenship she said.

I am not good with my money, I gave $2000 to charity when I went to South America but now I need paisa as she wants to get a house together and also there is the wedding expense.

Thanks bro I need to research this tonight!

living there?

Depends on where you'd work. If you work in D.C. or Maryland you'd want to live in Fredericksburg, Stafford or any of the northern cities... Richmond is an hours drive south and nearly 2 hours (without traffic and that's never the case) from D.C.

Virgina and Maryland are more affordable, D.C. is a rent nightmare and one of the most expensive places to live in the US.

Virginia is a very, very spread out state with a lot of farmland and dead-space, this can make commuting a problem if you live to far from where you work. Its light-rail system is well established in major cities such as Richmond, but it's limited outside of cities. In the North the D.C. metro links with the VRE (light-rail)

Where you work will determine where you live.

Honestly I'm not sure about the residency status, but here's some tax info on the subject:

Residency Status | Virginia Department of Taxation

You'd likely not be considered a resident, though your spouse would. For the sake of classification and taxation, these situations are refereed to as Mixed residency - or where only one member of the household or partnership is a resident, but both have taxable earnings (lottery winnings, income, etc.)

I'm not a US citizen or resident, though I do work in the US occasionally due to my links to US defense contractors and government institutions so I'm familiar with the Visa process, but not residency.

Thanks bro I need to research this tonight!

No problem but please take your time. It's a big decision and you want it to work out for the best.

I asked her the average house price in her area and she said it varies but $400-500k typical, she is 45 mins or 1hr from D.C, I will ask her the exact location.

You can any job to pay part of your bills, Besides lots of US colleges and schools would hire a PhD graduate. Best is to trust yourself and backpack to US.

Wow, I wouldn't get along with someone who asks for my bank balance. It really shouldn't be my place to say, but you should be cautious of what kind of woman your getting involved with. Stick to someone who you feel you can trust.

She said to come there for 5-6 days & meet her family etc and if everything goes to plan job hunt 2-3 months prior to moving out there f/t.

She said it's very safe where she lives but was it like living there? I love London and I sure I will miss it but I need to start a new chapter in my life.

This is Indian culture, I am not materialistic but her family require to know the finer details and also I have to provide the time of my birth! as they do the horoscope thing. :undecided:

Because I know she has a well paid job and I feel I might realistically make less money than her which sucks from a guy's perspective but maybe in 5-8 years I can live the American dream also? :D
