Bomb blasts in Mumbai

20 killed, 113 hurt in triple blasts in Mumbai: CM Chavan | Manipur News | Imphal News | Kanglaonline

MUMBAI, July 13: Terror struck Mumbai when three serial blasts rocked crowded areas in Zaveri Bazar, Dadar and the Opera House on Wednesday evening. According to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, at least 17 people were killed and 81 others injured in the serial blasts.
In New Delhi, the Union Home Ministry said the multiple explosions were a terror strike and that Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were used. Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh said two people were killed and about 100 injured in three explosions.
Police said the nature and intensity of the explosions were not known but the blasts revived memories of the terror attack in November 2008 in which 166 persons were killed by 10 gunmen of Pakistan-based terror outfit LeT.
Police said all the three blasts took place in a crowded markets and busy areas.
The first explosion took place in south Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, near famous Mumbadevi temple, this evening in which some people were injured, said Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli. The bustling market also has a number of jewellery shops.
The second explosion was reported in a taxi in Dadar area, he said. The site of the explosion was close to dadar railway station.
“We are verifying the nature of explosions. At this moment I cannot say anything more than this,” Mr. Tamboli said.
The third blast was reported from Opera House in Charni.
Teams of Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) have rushed to the spots.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan shortly after the serial blasts shook Mumbai.
NSG personnel and forensic experts were rushed to the western metropolis in a BSF plane from Delhi. The explosion in Zaveri Bazaar occurred in an electric pole in a crowded area. Zaveri Bazar area has been constantly targeted in the blasts and 54 people were killed during the explosions in 2003.
Security alert in Delhi
A security alert was sounded in the national capital following a series of blasts in Mumbai and police personnel were fanned across the city to carry out intensive searches and checkings.
A senior police official said top officials were reviewing the security situation in the city.
“A tight security apparatus has been put in place.
Senior officials are on the streets monitoring the security scenario. Police personnel have been deployed across the city,” a senior police official said.
The official said police personnel were deployed at public places like malls, cinema halls, parks, popular hangouts, ISBT and railway station. They are conducting checkings.
Three explosions were reported from south Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazar, Dadar in Central Mumbai and Opera House in Charni Road following which this action has been taken, the official said.
The national capital last month had a minor scare when a low intensity blast took place outside Delhi High Court. No one was injured in the incident.
“There is nothing to worry. All precautions have been taken. We appeal to the citizens to report to us about any suspicious objects or persons they come across,” the official said.

Unfortunately due to heavy moderation I'm not getting a chance to read up or discuss this topic. How is the atmosphere in India this time around? War war war, again? Doesn't seem so. Too early to tell?

If you see Obama's message to the Indians, its not very sobering, rather a bit on the provocative side. I hope CIA link is investigated too. We've all seen the heavy handedness of the CIA in Pakistan, from carrying illegal weapons, Raymond Davis' killing, the Osama raid and the Trainers fiasco. CIA is very active and almost everything they do seems to be with an anti-Pakistan intent. America will never jump into a conflict with Pakistan but will cheer India on to do so.

Unfortunately they don't have anyone alive caught in the act this time. Investigations would be tougher in the midst of it, the American media is trying to paint 2008 facts as 2011 facts. In something of such epic proportions, one must not jump to loose talk in such a manner.

Last night some Indian journalists who were taken live for comments by Pakistani channels were pointing fingers at Bangladesh and Pakistan while i observed that generally today the Indian news sites are observing restrain but i am afraid by tomorrow or day after the mood will change.

Lets pray for sanity

Problem is people in Mumbai are pretty pissed off. This city has been targeted time and time again and no concrete steps taken in any of the previous attacks. Even Kasab is still alive and living off the tax payer's money. Expect hardline right wingers to go hard on the govt on this. Which is why the govt. has not shot off from the mouth about people behind the blast unlike last time. Any indication of outside involvement would really put a lot of public pressure on the govt. already reeling from recent anti-corruption campaign of the civilians.
Expect hardliners to push the govt on this.

Did police trample over key evidence?

By: Shiva Devnath Date: 2011-07-14 Place: Mumbai

Onlookers claim authorities have not followed correct procedure while collecting clues, sweeping the blast sites clean, impounding cars

'Won't they ever learn?' is the question Mumbaikars are asking security officials and the government after serial blasts shook the city yesterday.

According to on the spot analysis and preliminary investigations, the police have committed the same mistake they did during the German Bakery blasts, Pune in 2010.

An official at Kabutar Khana, Dadar, collects evidence
from the crime scene

Reaching ground zero at Zaveri Bazaar, 45 minutes after the explosion took place, observers said cops cleared the area and cleaned up the site thinking it to be a cylinder blast, similar to the way they swept the crime scene in the Pune blasts.

Fire brigade and police officials reached the spot 45 minutes late during which locals had already rushed in to help the injured and the dying. After reaching the scene of the crime, authorities cordoned off the area.

"First, the rain acted as a spoiler due to which we were not able to collect the materials used in the blast and above that the fire brigade played spoilsport cleaning the blast site.

The site was only supposed to get cleaned once the forensic team completes their work but fire brigade officials cleaned the place before the forensic team could reach the site," said a senior crime branch official.

Showing further inattention, cops also towed away the cars, which were present both at Zaveri Bazaar and Dadar, which some officials say could prove to hamper investigations in the future.

According to a forensic expert, the police committed the same blunder Pune officials had made while investigating the German Bakery blasts in 2010. On February 13, the police and emergency services were called when a blast had ripped the well-known hangout. Initial reports had suggested it was a cylinder blast.

However, by the time cops finished cordoning off the area, they realised it was a terror attack. Unfortunately, by then the floor of the bakery was flooded with water, washing away all-important evidence.

The right way
On anonymity, a police official explained to MiD DAY the correct procedure of collecting evidence at blast sites.
"The police must first secure the blast site and cover it with plastic to protect evidence being damaged because of the rains. Then, they should wait for the forensic team to arrive and collect their samples. Ideally, all things should be left as they are including vehicles till all samples are taken."

Autopsies
Police Surgeon SM Patil said autopsies would be conducted on the bodies of the 21 victims and that relatives would face no hardship in claiming the bodies. According to Patil, the team of forensic surgeons would conduct the autopsies at the JJ post-mortem centre.

"Our support staff is also on standby and we are equipped to handle all the 21 cases if they are sent to JJ. The possibility of bodies being sent to the post-mortem centres at Nair and Sion hospitals cannot be ruled out at this stage, but we haven't received a single body yet. The post-mortem will begin as soon as possible," he said.
