Bollywood is back on PIA flights.

ISLAMABAD: Taking its open-channel policy on Hindi movies another step forward, the Pakistan government has lifted the age-old ban on screening Bollywood films on board Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe and America.

The airing of Indian movies on PIA flights was banned during the Pervez Musharraf regime, because “being the national carrier, it could not entertain passengers with Bollywood flicks”. The passengers had to instead choose between Hollywood and Lollywood (Pakistani) movies.

PIA circles say the ban has been lifted on the instructions of the more liberal and India-friendly co-chairperson of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Asif Zardari.

Managing director Captain Ayaz Haroon said the PIA had been also allowed to air on-flight those Indian movies which are being screened in Pakistani cinemas. Right now, he said, passengers boarding PIA flights would be able to watch latest Hindi flicks such as Bhootnath, Jannat and Taare Zameen Par.

“A policy is being framed to screen all Indian films cleared by the Pakistan Film Censor Board. It’s time we stopped giving importance to petty issues like Hindi film or no-Hindi film on board and move ahead,” Haroon said.

The passengers have welcomed the change with enthusiasm because Hindi movies still are the most preferred genre of films among the Pakistani audiences.

Yeah - we have been watching American movies (aka "soft power" per some) for how long, and where is Pakistani public opinion about the American government?

For that matter Indian soaps have been viewed for a while now too (and are atrocious I must say, the few I have watched). At the end of the day while people get see each other as more "human" (which is good), no one is going to start feeling inferior or forget the prevailing political situation.

By the way, whats the status on showing Pakistani shows (no one cares for the movies, unless Khuda Kay Liye is the new trend) in India?

And as for Pakistan's international airlines playing indian movies.. what a sham! how the heck are we going to promote tourism in pakistan with indian movies playing in all seats!?

Indian culture and Pakistani culture seem pretty similar. Except for the exclusively hindu rituals, the Punjabi culture is pretty much similar for both sides of the border.

a few movies being played on the plane wont make a difference. anyway pirated indian movies are making thier way to pakistan. maybe lifting the censorship on indian movies will stop piracy.

True, its good for both sides to normalize in anything right now, some powers have vested interest in India, Pakistan relations to deteriorate, we are buying arms to kill each other.

And I am sure that when we watch Indian movie, across the border the Indians watch our Dramas and listen to Pakistani music and vice versa, its great stuff, plus I think the Indians do like Rock as I see lots of Music videos are adding loads of Pakistani Rock bands in their clips.
