'Beijing-Dhaka ties will be substantially damaged if Bangladesh joins Quad'

well one thing you can do is build nukes. because.....you are about to be the center stage for the next great game. my best wishes.

Sorry that would be putting a massive target on our back.

BD is a potential friend to everyone but if we have nukes, we become a potential threat to everyone.

First we will sanctioned to hell by the world.
Then China, India and the US will ensure BD is finished - just in case we go to the opposite camp. Even Pakistan won't be happy to have another nuclear power in the neighborhood.

. . .
Have to say this is some Serious MISCALCULATIONS by the BD, and it is going to cost BD severely. BD was given an opportunity to stay neutral, but it decided to poke its nose in the affairs of a Superpower. Now watch how things will deteriorate on its Eastern border, and also from its Northern Border.

Yes. You are right. China has never force Bangladesh to choose but she did.

A terrible political blunder.

Nothing aggressive about the statement by China Ambassador.

We can called it blunt but it reflects the reality.

China will have nothing to lose aside from good tie and friendship with Bangladesh.

I have a question.

Why is MR Momen running around explaining the Chinese ambassador's statements to BD media? and not the Chinese ambassador himself? Since the ambassador made the error, surely he can come to BD press and correct it?

Since according to the BD minister the Chinese have clearly said something wrong. Why not make the Chinese clear the statement at a press conference. Why does a Bangladeshi minister need to come to media and clarify the statements for the Chinese ambassador ? An official appearance by the Ambassador will clear the air much better and kill off the confusion, than a BD minister running around clearing the air for him.

The Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, Li Jiming, has offered apology for his remarks regarding the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen confirmed the matter to The Business Standard on Wednesday.

Li Jiming delivered the comments in the face of abrupt aggressive questions of media, Dr Monem said.

Earlier on Monday, the Chinese Ambassador said Bangladesh's relation with China will "substantially get damaged" if Bangladesh joins "QUAD", a United Nation-led initiative.

The Foreign Minister said Bangladesh don't believe in any special relation with any specific country. "Especially, Bangladesh wants a balanced relationship with India and China." FM added.

The Bangladesh-China relationship is a historical one. During President Xi Jinping's visit to Dhaka, Dhaka-Beijing elevated the bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership." China is the largest trading partner of Bangladesh that makes this bilateral relationship equally economic and strategic.

On Monday, the Chinese Ambassador also termed "Quad" a military alliance aiming against China's resurgence and its relationship with neighbouring countries.

The Ambassador said Quad was a "narrow-purposed" geopolitical clique, and Bangladesh should not join it as it will not derive any benefit from the initiative.

The US, India, Japan and Australia are part of an informal strategic alliance - the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad as it is known.

If BD can make the Chinese ambassador come to the BD media and correct his statements or at least make the Chinese embassy in BD officially correct its statement---- Then it shows that it was an error on the ambassador's part and he has apologized.

Otherwise, Bd minister parroting words shows that the Chinese ambassador meant every word he said, and Mr. Momen is out in damage control mode to save the govt face.

Time will tell which is it.

In foreign countries. If a Foreign ambassador makes stupid remarks, the Ambassador clears the air ,either by press conference or by an official statement from the embassy. The minister of the host country does not run around correcting the ambassadors statement and clearing air.

Deter what though? Nuking your neighbouring country is bound to have an adverse impact (direct or indirect) on you. India and China will never nuke each other.
China-US is a different ball game.

It deters military adventurism.

Dhur mia....I was enjoying the who will nuke us first India or China discussions.
Ekdom 100% comedy :lol::lol:

Absolutely, I keep saying that, people dreaming of India-China major war need a reality check. Border skirmishes is max we'll be seeing from either side as nukes are involved covering each other's capitals with nuclear triad delivery.

okay, but you cannot do an india where you try to ride two boats at once. sooner or later you have to choose sides. the side you choose regardless will bring you under scrutiny. the examples of Syria and Libya are a good example of nations getting run down. you guys are sadly now become centrestage.

the bigger picture is that you need to protect your self and with a neighbour like india whose leash is now firmly in american hand!!

Drop it buddy. I sang the same song to them as you.

Now, according to some BD members I am a Chinese fanboy , hardcore Chinese nationalist and a Razakar hell bent on watching BD go down in flames .

The US has taken note of the statement of Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming that Dhaka's relations with Beijing will "substantially get damaged" if it joins Quad, a US-led initiative meant to ensure free and open Indo-Pacific.
"Well, we have taken note of that statement from the PRC ambassador to Bangladesh. What we would say is that we respect Bangladesh's sovereignty, and we respect Bangladesh's right to make foreign policy decisions for itself," said Ned Price, US State Department Spokesman, in a media briefing today.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.
He said the US has an incredibly strong relationship with Bangladesh and both the countries work closely with partners on a range of issues, from economic growth to climate change to humanitarian issues.
"And when it comes to the Quad, we've said this before, but the Quad, it's an informal, essential, multilateral mechanism that right now conveys – convenes likeminded democracies – the United States, India, Australia, and Japan – to coordinate in the Indo-Pacific, and fundamentally, to push forward our goal of a free and open Indo-Pacific region."
His remarks come after the Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka on May 10 said Quad is a military alliance aiming against China's resurgence and its relationship with neighbours.

The ambassador said Quad is a "narrow-purposed" geopolitical clique, and Bangladesh should not join it as the country will not derive any benefit from the initiative.
"History has proved again and again such partnership surely damages our neighbours' own social, economic development and people's well-being," Ambassador Li said.
