Thailand also didn't kick up a stink about accepting refugees and instead concentrated on developing bilateral economic links. Now their investments look likely to pay off handsomely as Myanmar comes in from the cold. *hint*

The Burmese have a pretty simple world view when it comes to 'race'. There are the Burmese and all the ethnicities who are like Burmese. Then there are the Thais (Yodya), the Chinese (Tayoke), the whites (aphyu), the blacks (amé) and then there are all those who are from the subcontinent (kalar). It's not really a racist epithet based on colour. It's analogous to calling someone 'white' for European, or 'black' for an African. Ofcourse it's not something to use in polite company but it's not that severe a word, either.
