Completely agree. Bangladesh currently has 280,000 active troops and 120,000 reserves.

For the landmass of Bangladesh this is probably overkill.

It would be sensible to cut the number of active troops in half(while keeping the number of reservists the same) so that the saved money could b spent on buying more modern hardware for the airforce and Navy

I am pretty sure the army is maintained to the ratio of the population in case there is an uprising.

Are you quite sure of the number you mentioned? As i dont think its an overkill, given our landmass or even the threat that surround us. A large army would only add to deterrence and we havent yet reached a stage, where our Navy or Air force can cause any headache to anyone. It would take time.

Therefore, by the time our economy stands up tall and we actually spend behind our Air Force and navy, the army needs to be maintained.

Landmass does not really matter. Look at singapore, their neighbourhood is very stable yet they maintain 400,000 men(their population is 4+mil ).

I think they should increase the army size and include a "Ranger Regiment" sort of group, to protect places with difficult terrain.

Singapore constitution has conscription in effect.
We need that in our constitution as early as possible
for the sake of bringing order in our society.

Conscription isnt gonna be effective in our society.

The rich and powerful are gonna send their kids abroad. Some wont even try since they are above the law
The poor needs their kids to earn income for the family.
Finally the middle people it will only be the ones joining the army.

Quite interestingly, we do not have such 'specialized' group in our army...i dont know, may be it is not in our doctrine. One day a moderator here asked me that do we have "Strike Corps" for immediate action during a war scenario. Though we dont, but i would like to see something similar. We do have hills near the Myanmar border, so something like a "Mountain Corp" could be raised or so.

I agree, conscription isn't that effective for the country. Armed forces of Bangladesh should be open to any Bangladeshi, and should be a professional one.

I believe that conscription is inversely proportional to quality. We have a strong, professional army...and that should be our focus for the years to come. Leniency is not an option, if we are to maintain professionalism.

That wasn't the point I was referring to,
in the streets of Singapore I've seen students
from college wearing military uniforms, helping
elders, cleaning the streets, traffic and quite jolly as well as
disciplined. Members of my family who went to cadet
have maintained their discipline throughout their life including
their friends.

Anyways student politics is rather worse then
conscription, that I can assure you. During the 50's, 60's
their was a goal in our society, students used to dream of
a free land but nowadays look at the situation, quite a disgrace.

the amount of army should be based on threat level if you think your enemy has huge army then have the ratio on that amount if no enemy then have it to the ratio of the people

Mountain Regiment, Swamp/riverine regiment, Marine corps are some of the important groups that bangladesh might need in the future.

Guys, how bout having an army camp in the sundarbans. It will train soldiers to fight in swampy terrain, plus scare away poachers and tree fellers

Well I got the number from Wikipedia.

140,000 active and 120,000 reserve would still be be a relatively large force of 260,000 men.

I agree that the large army does contribute to the deterrence in the face of the current weak airforce and navy.

A sensible option would be to phase in the reduction over the rest of the decade, so by the time the army is reduced to it's
lower size, both the airforce and navy are then pretty strong
