China will increase the duty-free access of Bangladeshi products to its market up to 95% to boost the trade relations between the two countries and to support Bangladesh in bringing down its trade deficit with the trading partner.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said this when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Conference Building of the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, says a UNB report Wednesday.

Hasina is now in New York on an eight-day official visit to attend the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Bijan Lal Dev briefed reporters after the meeting.

Extending her thanks to the Chinese government for raising the duty-frees access of Bangladeshi products, the Prime Minister said that Bangladesh always values the friendship and cooperation with the neighbouring countries, especially with China, as it is a big economic power.

Hasina said that both Bangladesh and China could work together for the development of the people of the region. She also noted that the party-to-party relationship between the two countries is also good.

Recalling that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had taken significant steps to strengthen the bilateral relationships between China and Bangladesh, Wang Yi said that the same way Sheikh Hasina has been continuing her efforts to strengthen the relationships.

He also apprised the Prime Minister that China would discuss with the authorities concerned of India, Myanmar and Bangladesh next month to move ahead with a project relating to economic corridor.

The Chinese Foreign Minister also praised the active role Bangladesh playing at different levels of regional and international forums.

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, PM’s Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Bangladesh permanent representative to the UN AK Abdul Momen were present.

This is all part of a long-term policy by China to economically and militarily allow BD to freely move away from the West and ally with the Chinese if it wishes to do so, or at the least be able to maintain neutrality.

BD desperately needs to reduce it's more than 80% dependence on exports to the West. The best sector for BD to do this is in garments, as China will slowly start to end it's production in this area due to rising labour costs.

We need to diversify our industries...We need to sell more to the west....but we need to sell multiple products rather than just one product....east is kind of self sufficient in garments industries.

AL all the way. AL is responsible for the economic growth and retaining the secular characteristics of BD.

We all are going to vote for Sheikh Hasina in the next election.. :yahoo: ...

AL will win, but the jamaatees on PDF won't believe. It is good to see a real Bangladeshi on PDF.

We need to reciprocate for this continous support that china has given us since 1975 . Building of the future planned deep sea port contract should be given to china. We really need to kick out these awami scumbags from power to ensure a prosperous BD.

That is true. But whatever is going on regarding the minimum wage in garments sector, isnt being handled by the govt. well. But hey, AL cant handle anything well anyway..

We need to sort this out. Our people are hardworking and we need to provide them with adequate incentives to continue the good job. The authorities need to discover a middle line between wages and production cost.

Cheers!!!

Many of the JI guys disguy themselves and their compatriots as BNP supporters. But, BNP supporters are not fundamentalists, they are progressive minded and by character will not come frequently with citation from some very old and half obsolete books to make a point same as the Talibans in Afghanistan and Pakistan do all the time.
