Bahrain's oil minister, Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Khalifa, has announced the discovery of the largest oil field in the country's history, with huge reserves of oil and gas, the largest reserves explored since 1932.
The Bahraini minister said that the quantities of light oil and associated gas, discovered more than 80 billion barrels, pointing out that the geological survey resulted in the discovery of large quantities of gas in the deep layers of the Bahrain field estimated between 10 to 20 trillion cubic feet.
Located off the west coast of Bahrain, independent assessments by De Gaulir, McCarton and Halliburton confirm the discovery by the National Oil and Gas Authority of large quantities of oil in the Gulf of Bahrain in the western region of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Expected reserves are more than 80 billion barrels, in addition to large quantities of gas in the deep layers of the Bahrain field estimated between 10 to 20 trillion cubic feet, and the discovery of new oil from rock oil is located on an area of about 2000 square kilometers, and estimates by two US companies go up to 280 billion to 560 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Gulf of Bahrain basin.
"The National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) aims to attract foreign oil and gas companies to develop the Bahrain Bay field, which covers an area of up to 2,000 square kilometers", the Bahraini oil minister said at a press conference in Manama. He said an agreement had already been signed with Hollybarton to drill two more valuation wells this year, identify the reserves potential and start long-term production.
Bahrain also plans to invite international oil companies to help develop its first major oil discovery in decades, hoping to start production from the field within five years.
