Pakistan has declared 129 soldiers and 11 civilians dead, seven weeks after a massive avalanche in the disputed Kashmir region buried an army camp.

On 7 April 21m (70ft) of snow engulfed a military camp in Gayari near the Siachen Glacier.

Here you go VCheng,

Pak Army declared Siachen avalanche victims as 'martyrs'
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Army said that given the improbability of recovering anyone alive, and after consulting religious leaders, it has been decided to declare brave soldiers as shuhada (martyrs) to try to reduce the families suffering.

Through rescue workers untiring efforts, bodies of three soldiers have been recovered, so far.

According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army has declared all the victims of Gayari sector as martyrs, as nature and magnitude of the calamity is suggestive of no probability of recovering any one alive.

Fifty-two days have passed since the tragic incident of Gayari took place and bodies of three martyrs were found during operation. Notwithstanding the resolve of troops employed on search operations, excavation work is taking time due to constraints imposed by terrain and weather, the statement stated.

In this backdrop, religious scholars from all sects and factions were consulted. Aspects related to socio-religious dimensions / implications, requirements to initiate the process of documentation, and reduction of the sufferings of the bereaved families have been evaluated in detail.

Therefore, it was decided to declare the remaining brave soldiers as "Shuhada". This is being done with mixed feelings of pride, grief and above all unflinching resolve to continue efforts to recover the remaining bodies.

May the Souls of departed, rest in peace! Ameen!

OBVIOUSLY the family is there, man!

you can clearly see that there are civilians here as well.....likely they are just not in the picture when it was snapped

Avalanches are still a subject of study and extremely hard to predict....and glaciers are notorious by nature...
It has happened before and will happen again...
1962 Peru earthquake and resulting Glacier collapse kills 2000 people

Kolka Glacier collapsed in Russia in 2002..Killed 140 people.

Glacier collapse in peru 2010 injures 50 people.

But among all known Glacier Collapses , unfortunately Gayari was one of the deadliest.

It was a monumental undertaking by Pakistan army to actually dig the Glacier and recover the dead bodies.
