Avalanche tragedy — Day 6: Foreign rescuers arrive in Giari in harsh weather

ISLAMABAD: While the harsh weather persisted, rescue efforts have been stepped up at the site of the avalanche near the Siachen Glacier as teams from the US, Germany and Switzerland have arrived in Giari to assist the military.

A spokesman for the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday that members of the US team would survey the site on Friday where a wall of snow crashed into a Pakistan Army camp on Saturday, burying 138 people, to assess the nature of the work required and equipment needed.

Teams from China and Norway were also expected to reach the incident site in the next 24-48 hours, the military said.

Talking to The Express Tribune, ISPR Director-General Major-General Athar Abbas said that although the chances of finding the trapped men alive were remote, but he was still optimistic. Due to the boulders and soft snow, sometimes holes and air pockets occur in the avalanche that helps the air pass through. And if that happened in our case, then I am still hoping that we would find some people alive.”

Rescue operations

Another “priority point” (point number six) has been added to the previously five identified points in search of the 138 buried — of which 127 were soldiers of the 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion and 11 civilian employees including waiters, barbers and a tailor.

According to the ISPR, 15 heavy machines which include dumpers, dozers, excavators and loaders are working at the search site at present.

Up to 115-foot deep excavation has been carried out at point one and work would start at a 130-foot long horizontal tunnel with a diameter of three meters to gain access to the accommodation area. At point two, excavation work has gone down to 100 feet.

The weather continued to be harsh and unpredictable, posing operational and administrative difficulties for both men and machines busy in the rescue operation. The Meteorological Department has forecast more snowfall in Siachen for Friday.

Avalanche tragedy

Too late, it is gone.

I was under the impression that the camp was buried in upto 80 ft snow. This is even more massive.
How much time is still needed for this effort?

Oh come on guys get out some good news today that they reached the trapped ones and saved them.......:undecided:

This is so painfull knowing your brothers and sons are trapped down there in unforgiving weather conditions waiting for help to arrive..........May ALLAH bless their souls and reward their sacrifises.

On the other hand PA has done it's best to rescue them with the available resources and in the very harsh weather conditions. How difficult it is to work in sub-freezing temperatures is difficult to explain to people living in warm temperastures. The rescue teams need to be appreciated despite being unsuccessful to reach any of the survivors or victims.

I don't have any experience of rescue efforts/missions, but still I feel that instead of tryting to move thousands of tons of snow/ice from the identified sites using heavy machinery, It would have been a lot better to dig out 2/3 feet wide diagonal tunnels to try to reach the buildings/victims. As tunnels can be dug a lot faster than moving a whole lot of snow and ice.

Rawalpindi - April 13, 2012:

Update Avalanche Clearance at Gayari Sector Siachen

Search and rescue Operation at Gayari continues at its full pace despite severe weather conditions, blizzard and low temperatures. The spirit of troops busy in rescue operation is high, who are determined to dig out their valiant comrades from tonnes of snow. The low temperature poses serious challenge to the effectiveness of plant equipment too. Disregarding the difficulties posed by 145 ft high pile of snow in the vicinity and extreme cold at the bottom of excavation, the troops are attempting a horizontal tunnel at the base of main excavation site to access suspected location of a structure to reach out to survivors.
The access tracks have been improved. Some infantry troops grouped into small teams continued to be employed on the periphery for search work. The outflow of water channel remains the same.

ImranKhan might be visiting the site on sunday... a Great Gesture indeed, per apnay president ya kisi bhi PPP walay ko tofeeq nahi hoi kay do lafz hi keh daitay....

A dignitary visiting a rescue operation site is the most stupid and selfish deed on that person's part, because his visit will just result in diverting resources from actual activity to ensuring that his visit goes all right.. Never thought of Immi bhai to be so politically motivated earlier :(

Something which our president should be doing instead of going to India. And what attention or resources will be diverted. Imran Khan does not look for escorts or cheap publicity stunts, Its a good thing that when all the others are busy in their stupid political drama bazi, he is actually willing to go there in such harsh conditions to support our men.

Thumbs up for Imran Khan

I haven't seen Imran Khan walking around with security or anything. All he needs is a jeep and a guide to get him to the right spot. Furthermore, Imran Khan's presence should help boost morale among the rescuers who are also taking the same risks that the victims went through.

Rescuers are not on facebook or PDF to know how much their work is being appreciated. There has been no joy in finding survivors or dead bodies, what the rescuers came there to do. It must be bumming them out 10x more than what it does to us sitting thousands of miles away.

Weather is perhaps the biggest enemy in this region:

from: Blizzard conditions hit avalanche rescue work | DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: Blizzard conditions on Friday hit rescuers searching for 138 people buried by an avalanche at a high-altitude Pakistani army camp as more foreign teams were due in the country to help operations.

A huge wall of snow crashed into the remote Siachen Glacier base high in the mountains in disputed Kashmir early on Saturday morning, smothering an area of one square kilometre (a third of a square mile).

Low temperatures are hampering the effectiveness of heavy machinery being used to dig through the mass of snow and ice at the Gayari base, the military said on Friday.

Specialist high altitude teams from the United States, Germany and Switzerland are being sent by road and air to the remote site, the military said, while units from China and Norway are due to arrive in Islamabad soon.

Search teams are looking for the trapped soldiers and civilians at six different points on the site, around 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) up in the mountains.

Troops are attempting to dig a horizontal tunnel at the base of the main excavation site to reach what is thought to be one of the camp buildings.

More than 450 rescuers are working in sub-zero temperatures at the site, though experts have said there is virtually no chance of finding any survivors.

Hats off to the rescuers who are working in sub zero temperate and blizzard when snow comes down like monsoon rain. You guys deserve some miracle.
