It seems that prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is under armymen’s rule in AMU. After Retired Lt Gen as VC, AMU gets former Group Captain as Registrar

By NVONews.Com Staff Correspondent,

Aligarh: So Aligarh Muslim University will now be run not only by a retired Army General but also by a senior Air Force officer. A retired Naval officer is what is required to make the team complete.

Last week Lieutenant General Zameeruddin Shah, elder brother of noted film actor, Naseeruddin Shah, was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of AMU. Descendant of 19th century Afghan chieftain Lt General Shah was born in Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh.

His appointment came as a bit of surprise as never in its history the AMU has got such a top ranking Army officer as Vice Chancellor. He had also served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff.

But what came as a bigger surprise is that on Friday the new Vice Chancellor appointed Group Captain (Retd) Shahrukh Shamshad of Indian Air Force as new Registrar of AMU. Captain Shamshad on Friday took charge from outgoing Registrar Prof VK Abdul Jaleel.

So the appointment of two former officers from army and air force has sent a clear message to the students as well as teachers. There is fear in a section of students that military discipline would now be enforced in the University known more for the campus politics.

In the last few years the University witnessed incidents of clashes and indiscipline too. In a couple of cases even lives were lost and students suffered injuries.

But then such incidents are common in other universities too. However, no university in the country has seen two retired army and air force officers at the top at the same time. Is it a co-incidence or a part of plan? This is the question doing the rounds. But nobody is daring to ask it openly as it is too early.

Both Lt Gen Shah and Group Captain Shahrukh Shamshad have academic experience too. Unlike former VC, P K Abdul Azis, who was from Kerala, both the new VC and Registrar have UP origin though they have served outside the state in their career.

Shah, a graduate of the Defence Services Staff, Higher Command Course at Army War College and National Defence College, also holds a masters degree in Defence Studies & Management from Madras University (1980) and M Phil from Indore University (1993). He is the first Muslim to reach such a high post in the Indian Army, though I H Lateef went on to become the Air Force chief of the country several years back.

On the other hand Group Captain Shamshad is the son of late Syed Shamshad Ahmed (IAS), who was a student of AMU.

Group Captain Shahrukh Shamshad is counted among national level shooters and he has got several medals.

I hope with distinguished and experienced leadership Aligarh Muslim University will touch new heights.

And cheap politics will give way to the academic excellence.
