Arjun lining up to be world's most expensive tank

would have been better to go with the leopard 2 A6 at only 5.7 mill a copy. India would have saved a ton of time and money.

True, but atleast money remains at home. it is more like what South Korea did with BlackPanther.

@ Thomas.

Following such measures would do very little to promote/develop the home grown manufacturing industries. Going down that path we would never be able to achieve the Indian dream of self -reliance in defence. As it is, we are already procuring on a massive scale.

.
By comparison, a new Abrams M1A2 cost the US$6.2 million in 1999. Indian media last week reported the first batch of Arjun Mk II's are likely to enter series production by 2015.

in 1999 ?
do they think it will be still at that price in 2015 !!

Then why not Abrams...the most combat proven tank of present generation. I don't think US will object if we ask them to sell us those magnificent machines...but thats not the case.Arjun program is all about an Indian effort to build a world class tank.

.
can any one tell me What Mr Anthony is talking bout???
1. Does he mean to say stand alone cost is 8 mill a piece or is it operational cost. Remember operational cost of F22 is 320 Million a piece while stand alone price is near 150 million.
2. Does this price tag include assembly line construction cost?
3. What will be change in price if We will buy 500 piece.
4. What will be lifetime cost (Some machines come cheaper while maintance is high for them)
5. M1 ABarams costed 6 million in 1999, Now it will cost much higher.
6. Some one here talking bout buying challenger/M1AB/Leopard. Do they know bout Tanks?? These all tanks are Heavy (65-70 tonns), while Arjuna is 55-60 tonns. Indian army want Tank with weight 45-50 tonns. Now how the hell western tank are good buy for us????

Read 6th point...

heavy tanks are good for Desert warfare, But in Swampy land of Punjab (During rainy season) Heavy tanks mobility is limited. This was the reason it was rejected by India and Pakistan both.

I thought Pakistan rejected it as its gun was found to be less accurate.

Gun accuracy could be fixed, It won't be big issue. Actually pakistan didn't wanted to do another asal-uttar. Imagine 65 ton Tank stuck in Muddy terrain of Punjab, It would be shame for both USA and Pakistan.

45-50 ton is apt weight for these area, and more over the infrastructure (bridge) at border is not good enough to accommodate that load.

I got this information from a documentary youtube called "We are soldiers" about PA in which a PA tank commander said that the army rejected Abrams as its gun was found to be not so accurate.

May be it could be true. But my point is Gun accuracy is not big issue, it can be fixed. When it was offered to Pakistan it was one of the best tank in world.

Defense deal work in a definite manner. Vendor ask client to evaluate there product. Client show the shortcoming, vendor rectifies it. And the final product rocks. Every client looks for their needs. May be it was not fitted pakistan need that time. Quality, Cost, Strategic value of product are defining criteria, None of machine can fit all 3 parameter 100%. we have to compromise somewhere.

A small correction,A heavier tank does not necessarily get stuck in mud where a lighter one would plow through but the Ground Pressure of the Tank also matters! In our case the Arjun can move in a better way compared to our Bhishma's due to the lower Ground pressure it exerts:)

.
Most probably this 8million/tank is operational cost and not per unit price. And Arjun MkII will not use Iron Fist APS,that's just a wet dream of Prasun chor Sengupta.Dr V.K.Saraswat himself stated that his organisation had developed the silo mounted directional warheads and mmw radar.

.
another thing is the Arjun MK2 will be 55t less than the MK1 anyone know how many MK2's will be ordered? if this tank is better than T-90M we should go for at least 1,000 of them but that would make us bankrupt at 8 million dollars a tank besides the FMBT will take over from there are on out how many MK2 we going to order total?

Are you sure that Arjun MkII will be 55 ton??As per my info, the MkII will be 62+ton due to additional composite panels and heavy ERA-NERA combo.
REGARDS.................
