Arjun lining up to be world's most expensive tank

Not trying to troll here but the time this project took seems too long to be acceptable.

But it still beat T-90S straight away and now coupled with latest technologies. What we need a hi-tech killing machine not its date. the development cost increased but still much lower than elsewhere.

When we have Arjun Mk2 which is one of the best tank made ...we don't have to worry about timeline...
We will get it when we need it most!!!

THATS ONLY !$3 BILLION FOR NEARLY 500 ARJUNS

CHICKEN FEED MONEY

What are the costs of similar tanks (60 ton class with same capabilities) else where?

India's Arjun (Lion) Mk II main battle tank will cost US$8.02 million per unit, defence minister AK Antony has told his nation's parliament. The French ADIT agency notes this makes the indigenous Indian design the world's most expensive tank to date.

By comparison, a new Abrams M1A2 cost the US$6.2 million in 1999. Indian media last week reported the first batch of Arjun Mk II's are likely to enter series production by 2015. Development of the Arjun reportedly started in 1972 with a production decision following in 1996 and a production order for 124, costing US$471.2 million, placed on the Indian Ordinance Factory's production facility at Avadi in 2000.

The first 45 58.5 metric ton (mt) tanks were delivered to the Indian Army between August 2004 and May 2009. A further 55 followed by June this year. The original design relied heavily on foreign components and technology, with close to 50% of the tank's components initially imported. Much of this has since been replaced by indigenous systems, including a 120mm main gun. After extensive field evaluations and tests, the tank entered service with the 75th Armoured Regiment on May 12.

The automotive trials, in 1988-1989, revealed major deficiencies in mobility, engine, and transmission. Further mobility and armament trials followed in 1996 and 1997. The Army reportedly found the performance of the prototypes “below the acceptable standards” and listed as deficiencies the accuracy of the gun at battle ranges, mission reliability, ammunition lethality, emergency traverse and a fire control system unable to function in temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius.

Anthony added the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved an order for 124 more Arjun, albeit in the 55mt Mk II guise. This features 93 upgrades, including 13 major improvements over the Mk1.

The article is comparing the Arjun's 2011-2012 prices with Abraham's 1999 price.
There is a full 13 years difference and with simple rate of bank intrests the $6 million would be $10-12 million in 2011-12.
THere may be a price to Arjun as an equipment, but there are many price less spin offs which can not be quantified. Moreover, Arjun being our tank , the life cycle cost can be lower with each upgrades.
I and all of India have high hopes from the Mk-II

Is it just me or does the Arjun look painful to look at? Horribly ugly!

I think considering the number of armored vehicles in our army and also considering the whole armored regiment is going to be replaced by newer vehicles indian companies should start working on every components like engine, aps etc. This will also reduce the cost of MBTs and ICVs. Around 2600 FICV and 4000 FMBT will be inducted in the future. Its safe to say that the company building these parts should not worry about sales...

. .
And above all ...if also we spend money on Arjun...our own military industry will be beneifitted rather than any outside country..
Another question just out of my curosity...Did China has invented any Tank? How much this will cost? This must be damn cheap than Indian Arjun?

amir bro, its way beyond that u r saying (money rotating in country) its about future, we are investing in future tech, this tree will give fruits after 10 years, when it comes to global sales of defence equipment sales india is way behind, but when it comes to laying hands on best from the west no one can match

This is true. That is why India should focus on procuring equipments from the best manufacturers instead of trying to rush production of indigenous weapons when its not ready.

.
would have been better to go with the leopard 2 A6 at only 5.7 mill a copy. India would have saved a ton of time and money.

.
India ought to integrate the acquired technological knowhow into the existing and proposed indigenous platforms.
