Thielert Sale Might Further Delay Turkish Drone

Sep. 12, 2013 - 12:08PM

By BURAK EGE BEKDIL

ANKARA — Chinese group Avic International’s acquisition of Thielert, a bankrupt German maker of diesel engines for aircraft, may further delay Turkey’s indigenous drone, the Anka, which would have been powered by Thielert’s Centurion engine.

Avic has said it plans to fold Thielert into its Continental Motors division and is giving up military business. Deliveries have stopped, the state-run Chinese company announced in August.

The Ankara-based Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), which develops the Anka, had ordered the Centurion for a batch of 10 aircraft. Now TAI must look elsewhere to find a new engine to power Turkey’s first indigenous UAV.

“This may not be an easy task although one option is to ask TEI [Turkish Engine Industries] to develop and produce a new engine,” one TAI official said. Both TAI and TEI are owned by a military support fund.

Turkish procurement authorities were preparing to sign a contract to buy 10 Ankas. Meanwhile, the Turkish police force was also preparing to place an order for the Anka.

Before the engine snag, another problem delayed the Anka program. A locally-developed electro-optical sensor, made by military electronics firm Aselsan, did not fit Anka’s specifications and TAI was mulling using a foreign sensor.

Thielert was supplying engines for aircraft including a US Army version of the General Atomics Predator. General Atomics has acquired the engine data package and intends to continue production and support.

The Anka successfully passed acceptance tests late in January. The final, decisive tests on Jan. 20-21 involved a full endurance, 18-hour flight, successful auto landing, data link performance at a distance of 200 kilometers under winds up to 45 knots, and night take-offs and landings.

The Anka has completed more than 150 flight hours. There is a possibility that TAI could develop a satellite-controlled version of the Anka, company officials say.

The Anka is a medium-altitude, long-endurance drone. Such UAVs usually operate for 24 hours at an altitude of 10,000 feet.

Anka, meaning Phoenix in English, is the first MALE-type UAV to be produced by TAI. One of the prototypes crashed during a test flight in September, but several other flight tests have been carried out successfully.

Anka+, another version of the Anka, calls for an armed vehicle, using a rocket attached to its body and sensors.

An industry expert said finding a new engine supplier may not resolve the entire problem immediately.

“Any new engine will have to be fitted into the Anka, which was designed for the Thielert engine. This will require new [engine] integration work. New tests should also be done,” he said.

One procurement official familiar with the Anka program admitted that the engine problem may cause new delays.

“Even if we found a new [engine] supplier, this will mean further delays and extra costs,” he said.

Who bought the company will not move a stone, it's all up to agreement between two parties and afaik such big and important agreements are under protection of international law. Unless we & Burak Bekdil don't know the conditions of contract, comments will be useless.

they are shutting down military business, but those engines are still available for sale through their continental devision. i don't see any problem..

Who wants to bet for 5 bucks that the industry expert he keeps talking about isn't their, but rather he's just making his own opinion :).

Anyways,
What does it matter if a Chinese bought the company? This shouldn't change anything in the production facilities of a company.
The engine we bought would still be in production.

China will buy all the technology in US and EU and then beat the US/NATO with this tech. Turkey should look at Japanese engines, they will not sell their company to China.

US will never sell their technology and especially aerospace related companies to any non-US entity or country.

When Hawker Beechcraft went for bankruptcy, Mahindra & Mahindra offered to buy the company. But US government pressure made HB look out for a 'domestic' solution.

This Burak Bekdil guy is a joke. He always writes like he is some kind of "defence authority" but apparently he missed the signature ceremony for our own engine.

TEI to Develop Indigenous Engine for ANKA Unmanned Aerial vehicle.

Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) and TEI signed a contract for the development of an indigenous engine specific for Anka unmanned aerial vehicle on 27.12.2012. The signature ceremony of the project, which will contribute to innovation and technological development oriented goals of Turkey in its 2023 vision, was held with the participation of Undersecretary for Defence Industries Murad Bayar and TEI General Manager Akın Duman. The engine to be developed in compliance with aerospace and military standards through modification in order to meet Anka platform’s needs is planned to be completed within four years including qualification and certification tests.

The project will cover the design and development of hardware and software of engine in accordance with the required aerospace standards, its production, tests as per aerospace and military standards, realization of technologic demonstration, type certification, establishment of technical data package, training and maintenance activities.

The development, type certification and Design Organization Management Approval studies will be carried out collaterally within the Project scope. The engine is to be developed in compliance with mechanical and electronic interfaces of Anka platform and to generate 155 HP. The engine to be developed will meet Anka’s performance and electrical needs at high altitude and have redundant digital engine control unit.

Not On Plane/Jet Engines.

On this actually the British/Americans are the Leader.

On Vehicle Engine Germany>USA/England>Sweden>Japan>Russia>China

its a 4 stroke piston diesel engine. Japs are good in gasoline and this is a diesel feul engine...

Diesel is the best option to save fuel cost and have more power in a smaller package:

A few more similar Diesel aircraft engines:
Products - Austro Engine (AUSTRIA)
used in:
Aircraft | Diamond Aircraft (USA)

DeltaHawk Diesel Engines (USA, designed from ground up, long R&D time, many years)

There a gasoline engine that is made from Honda fit block:
Viking Aircraft Engines Honda Based Aircraft Engine Welcome (USA)
But its power at 110 HP is less than the Thielert or Austro or Deltahawk diesel engines which are between 135-200 HP. The guy who made this one can easily make higher powered ones, if he is given the funding, based on another bigger car/pickup truck diesel or gasoline engine:
Inside Mazda

Coming up with a new engine will be expensive and time consuming. It will be better to use one of the existing engines or buy up Deltahawk or Viking with their designs, patents and production line, just like the Chinese have done. With UAV's becoming a hot new market, the demand for these kind of engines will increase. The most important commodity here is the human resources who worked on these products for decades, mainly because it is their passion/hobby all in one.
