The Turkish Engine Industry & Trade Corporation (TÜMOSAN), in cooperation with İstanbul Technical University (İTÜ), is looking to increase its annual production of diesel engines from 75,000 to 100,000, TÜMOSAN managers announced in a press release issued on Wednesday.

TÜMOSAN manufactured Turkey's first liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-powered diesel engine in cooperation with İTÜ's Automotive Technologies R&D Center (OTAM) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) in February of 2011. According to the press release, in accelerating it efforts to ease Turkey's dependency on foreign sources in the automotive industry, TÜMOSAN recently designed Turkey's first domestically produced six-cylinder diesel engine. The first test of the prototype is scheduled to take place in August of 2014.

TÜMOSAN already manufactures 75,000 diesel engines annually at a factory in the province of Konya, but its new target for the factory is 100,000. As per the press release, as Turkey's first diesel engine manufacturer, TÜMOSAN is not only continuing its efforts to advance the quality of the diesel engines it manufactures but will produce a new type of domestic diesel engine. It is currently able to produce three- and four-cylinder diesel engines of 50-115 horsepower. The corporation plans to increase the performance of these engines to 50-135 horsepower. Its new six-cylinder diesel engine is expected to run at up to 250 horsepower.

TÜMOSAN is also working toward manufacturing 275 horsepower diesel engines for use in the agricultural sector and 450 horsepower diesel engines for the domestic automotive industry.

Do you or anyone else know more details about what this new 450 HP engine is going to be used for? For example, are they going to replace imported engines used in any of the vehicles made by BMC, Otokar or TEMSA?

May be not immediately, but I am watching with interest indigenous technology development in Turkey. Turkey has indigenous technology for every part of Altay, except the power plant, which is made by only few countries - MTU (Germany), Cummins (USA), Japan, Malyshev (Kharkov, Ukraine) and of course Russia and China. But Turkey has a history of successful design of diesel engines - Otosan Ecotorq (260-360 HP) for Ford-Otosan heavy commercial vehicles and Tumosan (48-100 HP) for marine and agricultural machines like tractors. Tumosan also has new designs for 250, 275 and 450 HP diesel engines and they were awarded to design the 1800-2000 HP power plant for Altay. It is supposed to be ready by 2017, may be it will take a few more years, lets say by 2020 it will be in production for sure.

Ford-Otosan Turkish designed engine for heavy vehicles was also licensed to one of Fords Chinese subsidiary, Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd (JMC, former Taiyuan Chang'an Heavy Vehicle Co., Ltd.).

So we have two very promising engine design facility in Turkey - Ford-Otosan in Tubitak and Tumosan. The first one has 1000-1800 engineers if I remember correctly.

So its not just about Altay tanks, but about commercial heavy trucks and buses. Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Arab world can collectively provide a big captive market for Turkish indigenous technology and in turn we can also hope for technology transfer to do the low tech simple part of the manufacturing in our own cheaper labor countries, to reduce cost of the end product.

I think we are looking at the start of an era of developing Turkey as the industrial core, whereas the rest of Muslim countries can become semi periphery and periphery to help Turkey elevate itself and reach that status, in the hope that it will make Turkey less dependent on other powers eventually and as a result less constrained to share the technology with fellow Muslim countries.

The secret of the strength of large countries or team of countries is a large internal captive market that provides economies of scale, for commercial and for defense technology. US led West and NATO partners, China-Russia team, India all of them have a large captive internal market to a varying extent, which gives them economies of scale. For Muslim countries to succeed collectively, we can simulate a similar effect, if we start giving preference to and support indigenous technology developed in house within Muslim countries, such as the ones we discussed above.

That is awesome manpower proportion.
If I check in unupdate wikipedia, ford otosan has 9,581 employee.
That 10,000 employee company actually only need less than 500 engineers.

As comparison, when Indonesian Company PINDAD first producing ANOA APC, its vehicle division only have 1 engineer, half dozen designer, and less than 50 technician.

It seem that Turkey has German minded policy, employing many highly educated staff.

I have question.
How many steel foundry Company does turkey have? How about Turkey capability of producing ballistic steel sheet?
Does Turkey have Company that produce ballistic polymer of ceramic based ballistic protection?

@Kaan gave you list of steel production foundries, but as far as i know high-quality ,special-steel production stays limited in turkey, for example , SAR vessels which reachs to 80 meters,and recently commissioned in Turkish Navy has been built in Turkey,but steel arrived from US . In case of need, a quick R&D will give ability to produce other kind steels too (like the one used in Milgem ).

For balistic protection , Roketsan takes care of this armour development and they might have joint studies on polymer/ ceramic based material. Since turkey is stepping ahead newly in armour needed units, this sector also emerging newly.

Study on damping characteristics of hydropneumatic suspension unit of tracked vehicle

Hydropneumatic suspension unit is an important part of tracked vehicles to absorb external impact load exerted from the non-paved road and the cannon discharge. Its absorption performance is strongly influenced by both damping and spring forces of the unit.

In this paper, we numerically analyze the damping characteristics of the in-arm-type hydropneumatic suspension unit (ISU) by considering four distinet dynamic modes of the ISU damper: jounce-loading, jounce-unloading, rebound-loading and rebound-unloading. The flow rate coefficients determining the oil flow rate through the damper orifice are decided with the help of independent experiments. The wheel reaction force, the flow rate at cracking and the damping energy are parametrically investigated with respect to the orifice diameter and the wheel motion frequency.
