****** Airtel plans to launch a fibre link to Bangladesh

****** Airtel executives, however, declined to reveal the company’s 3G gameplan in Bangladesh

****** Airtel will shortly launch an international fibre-optic cable link to boost internet speeds in Bangladesh even as it readies to pitch for 3G airwaves that will be auctioned by the neighbouring country in early-September, Economic Times reported on Monday.

The Sunil Mittal-founded telco has invested an undisclosed sum in a terrestrial fibre-optic cable link between India and Bangladesh to have the bandwidth in place to handle the expected surge in data traffic in the neighbouring country, post-rollout of 3G services.

Its wholly-owned Bangladesh arm, Airtel Bangladesh, is, in fact, likely to take the 3G route to boost the company’s under 8% market penetration in a country that is home to some 103m mobile customers.

****** Airtel executives declined to reveal the company’s 3G gameplan in Bangladesh but said “the new fibre-optic cable link would support the anticipated data thrust in the neighbouring country once third-generation mobile broadband services get rolled out”.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BRTC) will also allow telcos to bid for only 5 MHz or units of airwaves in the 2100 MHz band for offering high-end data services on the 3G platform.

The spectrum auction is reportedly scheduled on September 2.

Airtel’s new fibre-optic cable link will, accordingly, serve as a second international gateway to reinforce connectivity to Bangladesh and also help route bilateral global voice and data traffic.

Company executives added that all existing mobile phone companies and internet service providers (ISPs) in Bangladesh would be able to use Airtel’s fibre-optic cable link to improve the overall quality of international voice and data connectivity in the country.

****** Airtel already has direct terrestrial cables linking China and other key Saarc markets like Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan.

1.I am a frequent traveler to India whenever I visit Asia from Canada. Indian telecom, incl cell, are definitely the lousiest in Asia. It's way too expensive compared to BD where incoming is free. Not so in India. And what a hassle traveling from one state to another! That's why NE and P/bangla people use BD SIMs. Telecom in BD, incl cell, are cheap and efficient.

2. This deal with B/Airtel was possible just because there is an Indian compliant govt in power. Indian raiders with bag full of cash are already active in many sectors. For instance they control paint industry, local cosmetics & toiletries, poultry, food processing and some more. These are wiping off local entrepreneurs.

3. BD must resist commercial colonization by India at all cost.

It shows you can post any think to prove your BS ..... what a idiotic post this

Just come with a facts about low calling rates, In India all CDMA providers not charging for incoming calls any where in India and even for GSM some companies start to offer same.

u nailed it!
i think th bd member here is confused with roaming charges rofl!

Telecom inside India and their cell phones are quite unreliable and expensive. If you buy a SIMCARD in one state that it may not work in another. There incoming charges. In fact the whole system is in mess. Wonder what these guys are going to do here? BD is ahead of them in this field and the cell phones cos are more efficient.

Where on earth do yiu get these ' pearls of wisdom" from ?

Seriously, .. there are no charges for incoming and starting Oct roaming across the country shall also be free. The call charges in India are among the cheapest in the world. reliance now offers 10p / call across the country amongst other things.

BD SIMs must be used by pole vaulters only if at all.

Please update yourself before you post with such authority.

No point in arguing with them. Let them enjoy their stone age ayurvedic telecom services. It is just impossible for them to reconcile with the fact that BD telecom is far ahead of theirs

You should put source for your big mouth claim ..... You dnt even know the reality of Indian telecom sector and giant of this game Airtel & Reliance.

You really want to know quality ???

Bangladesh has lowest number of internet users among all SA nations.
Internet users (per 100 people) | Data | Table

Though broadband internet access is available it charges high for high speed connection than other south Asian countries, though this is rapidly changing. Broadband internet and e-commerce in Bangladesh is slowly progressing.WiMAX service is now available from some internet service providers. In Bangladesh Broadband is legally defined as 128/128 kbit/s, which is not in line with ITU.[19] Therefore most of the Broadband internet services and also subscribers are using bandwidth that may not be considered a broadband in other countries and may not be broadband in international standards .

BD telecom is probably behind even African countries. Maybe you guys might give good competition to failed countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan in telecom industry. Cmmparing yourselves with the worlds second largest telecom industry in the world (India) is you guys preferring to show your stupidity in an international forum.
