Air Force chief has said conclusion of a $22 billion fighter jet deal with French company Dassault Aviation was imminent after missed deadlines and delays.

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha told a newspaper that the military could not afford any more hold ups of the 2012 deal to supply 126 French-made Rafale fighters.

Raha said a deadline for finalization of the deal had not been set but added "it's going to happen soon."

He also appeared to throw cold water on attempts to re-enter the race for the giant contract by by a European consortium that makes the Eurofighter, a rival to the Rafale.

"It will not be appropriate to make any changes in the process," he said in an interview with the HT newspaper published on Wednesday.

"The current government has set the pace of work and things are moving fast enough on the fighter deal."

The daily quoted a defence ministry official as saying "Rafale has run through the finish line."

"It's too late in the day to parachute into the race. The door is closed," the unnamed official said.

Dassault won the right in 2012 to enter exclusive negotiations with India to supply 126 fighters after lodging a lower bid than Eurofighter for a tender with an estimated value of $12 billion.

Those negotiations have since been delayed, prompting Britain to raise the contract with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in July, holding out hope for the Eurofighter.

NDA govt has pledged to streamline and speed up a major modernisation of the country's military, and has lifted a cap on foreign investment in defence.

India's defence procurement has traditionally been an opaque business, marred by postponements and repeated re-negotiations over cost.

Now all doubts are cleared for all those who try to spread rumours on the basis cheap payment from west nations:enjoy:

Since when did the tender go up to 22 billion?

Well, the value of tender is upto 22 Billion USD, not 22 Billion USD
Initial contract will be for 12 Billion USD for the fighters and a seperate 3-4 Billion USD for the weapon's package which will include
Meteor BVR Missiles
MICA BVR Missiles
SCALP Cruise Missiles
Exocet anti ship missiles
Brimstone ATGM
JDAM kits

It's a BS figure that the Indian media pulled out of their @rses a long time back (well it was $20BN then, I guess this publication has inflated it by 10% for god know's what reason).

Author's imagination. you will see different figures in different news websites. Just saw same news on other website with 25 billion mark while reality is that only MoD knows actual figures.

Mr Jaitley had only one query: what is the cost of the contract?

The IAF's answer --Rs. 100,000 crore spread over 10 years -- immediately evoked a positive reaction from Mr Jaitley, sources in the Ministry of Defence told NDTV
India's Rafale Fighter Jet Deal in Final Lap, Awaits Government's Nod
That's about $15-16BN USD. The initial cost had been about $12BN USD, factoring in inflation that jump isn't bad.

I have always disputed the $20BN USD figure constantly propagated by the Indian media (and picked up by international press), it seems they simply pulled this figure out of their backsides.

Additionally what many ignorant commentators don't seem to understand is that 50% of the cost of the deal has to be ploughed back into India under the offsets clause of the deal and that the entire cost of the deal won't be paid by India but upfront but spread out over a decade.

For an AF looking to spend $150BN USD by 2025/6 this isn't a huge burden at all.

Good.

Kill fgfa

Reduce our dependence on Russian stuff.

Upgrade su30mki to incorporate fifth gen strengths.

Ie internal weapons pod
Rcs reduction techniques
News weapons and radars.

A bit like wat USA are doing with their f15 s and f18 stealth versions.

Stick to rafale

Get lca into mass production and post 2020 move to a amca but enlist the full aid of USA who vsn help massively

Forget the buying off shelf again be it Russia of France or usa.
