Indeed there is a need for a strong air force, but following Israel is rediculous. Israel is a tiny country, with tiny army, so it needs a strong air force to counter the enemy which is far away for example Iran or Syria. This is the reason they have the qualitive air force.

Indeed, we can't compare PAF to ISDF as the latter heavily depends on US financial and military aid.
In terms of GDP, Israel is slightly bigger than Pakistan but they are getting atleast $10 billion per annum from USA.
Thats the only reason they can afford to have such a brilliant and well equipped airforce.
Give PAF $10 billion aid per year, than we're talking...

I would choose the Gripen over the J-10 anyday. The Gripen cost only 35 Million and is better than the J-10 (30 Million). Gripen has one of the best Data-Linking systems on the Planet, the Gripen was made to counter Soviet Made SU series by using its superb data-linking to distract the Su-30 while another Gripen would Fire its missile 50 Miles away.

If the PAF goes for the Gripen (wich I think they will) then we will have a much stronger force than if we go for the J-10.Another option would be to go for 50 Raphales or Eurofighters (better than 65 gripens) to counter the Indian Sukhois.

Kaiser,

Even better option would be a mixture of Gripen and J-10 for several reasons.
First of all, Grippen uses an American engine and radar so it will always be a subject to future sanctions whereas J-10 can be acquired with ToT and there's no political risk for future spares supply.
So its better to keep the number of Gripens limited and opt for the improved J-10.

Secondly, Grippen won't come with ToT so we'll be depending on Sweden for the duration of operationality.

Furthermore, we need to diversify our airforce.
A mixture of F-16c/d, JF-17, JAS-39 Grippen and J-10 would give us hell of a capability to counter any threat from over neighbors.

Right now with the earthquake thinge, PAF is'nt even gonna go for F-7s let alone F-16s. Wait a few more months or years till something is done. This also gives PAF to make up it's mind if they really want viper that badly, or will JF-17 would be able to do the trick ?

Well, we're past the mourning period and the deal has been revived during Aziz' last visit to the US.
Formal request from Islamabad has been given to set a time scedule for dilivery and Bush will put this up with the Congress next month.
We'll be getting refurbished F-16 this year already, awaiting the new ones within 18-20 months after the go ahead.

Sorry Neo but i have to disagree with you on this i would hate PAF to go for a machine which is inferiour to the F-16 what ever the JAS-39 Gripen can do F-16 can do it better besides we are suppose to go forward not go back the only thing good about gripen is its cockpit layout and its data-link which is one of the best data link systems in the word besides that the jet is crap it depends mostly on U.S parts and is underpowered and no its not easy to induct two types of fighter jet with similar roles at the same time it would create a hell lot of problems for the ground crew a logistical nightmare ........

Pakistan should go for a Indian MRCA like tender, where we look for 75-100 MRCA fighters instead of 125.

The options should be

-Mirage-2000 5
-More F-16's
-F-18
-J-10C
-Gripen

That way our options would become wider.

The only reason I would ever choose the J-10 over any fighter is when the J-10C comes out. Many Think-Tank sites say that the J-10C is as good as the Rafale and Eurofighter! If this is true then the J-10 should be the First this on out list for a new MRCA. Not only will it be much easier for the PAF (Maitenance, Cost, Training) but, it would supply a whole new (next generation) platform for the PAF.
