WASHINGTON: The Kabul airport reopened early Tuesday morning Afghanistan time after being closed for hours by US forces following a breakdown in security on the tarmac that interrupted evacuation operations, a US general said.

The airport reopened at 1935 GMT Monday, said Major General Hank Taylor, a logistics specialist on the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He said a C-17 transport aircraft had landed with US Marines aboard, and a second one loaded with an army unit was to land soon, to help establish security for the airport.

Taylor said the United States was "in charge of air traffic control" at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) for military and commercial flights.

He added that there were already about 2,500 US troops in Kabul to help organize the evacuation of thousands of Americans and Afghans who worked for them as translators and in other jobs.

By the end of Monday, US time, he said there could be 3,000 to 3,500 on the ground.

"Our focus right now is to maintain security at HKIA, to continue to expedite flight operations while safeguarding Americans and Afghan civilians," he said.

The airport was shut down Monday after crowds of civilians surged onto the runways, the Pentagon said.

Videos taken from the airport showed hundreds of Afghans flooding onto the runways and trying to impede the takeoff of one of the US transports.

Meanwhile two armed Afghan men were killed by US forces as thousands sought to board flights.

Guys please don't take offence to this and I really do appreciate Pakistani culture but comon, shalwar kameez is like a dude in a dress, sometimes change is okay you know.

They all stem from flowing robes linked to royalty and times when there weren’t too many trends to wear a garment designed specifically for legs. Once the idea of leg garments caught on, the practicality of the dress is best limited to women and field workers.
Either way, the PM is lost in his musings of some fictional “Islamic state “ that reflects a mix of shalwar qameez and sherwani. At the end, I would love to see the practicality of a shalwar as a battle dress, inside a tank with places to get stuck on or even for heavy machinery. Torn shalwar qameez’s are commonplace among people using it in environments with anything sticking out that could tear. The same goes for seeing how they intend to talk on women’s rights and then appreciate the “cultural victory” of the Taliban. Good luck

I cant agree more! This is why our educated, English speaking classes always look at Pakistan and its society from west's perspective.

Indian media is reporting one sentence from a long speech the PM gave today about education.

He was at the official launch of the Single National Curriculum. During his speech he was talking about mentality, and especially slave mentality. He talked about how the Pakistani education system encouraged a slave mentality through the English Medium curriculum. He said it was bought originally to create brown Englishmen for the Empire. He said post independence we adopted it and kept that same culture where our culture/language is considered inferior to those of Westerners.

He talked about the class divide between the students of religious seminaries, Urdu medium and english medium. He said he wanted to unify the nation by bridging these divides. He said the single national curriculum is step 1 and the status quo will fight it. He said we'll need to burn our boats in order to implement these changes.

During this speech he went on to talk about how in higher education people adopt English culture and become mental slaves to this foreign culture. He said mental slavery is worse than actual slavery. It's an acceptance of foreign culture as superior to yours. He said breaking the chains of mental slavery is very difficult. He said Afghanistan has broken the chains of physical slavery. He said the mental slavery is hard to break.

But the English Medium schools are better in quality than the Urdu ones.
So I do not completely agree with this article.

Ummm...sir...but the English medium schools in Pakistan are better than the Urdu ones.

But you are right, the westernized elite are distant from the masses of Pakistan.

Poor Sir Syed Ahmed Khan - the mental slave

His philosophy was only applicable when British had taken over the Indian subcontinent. He wasnt wrong. But once we want to be free, aspire to be a free nation, his philosophy is redundant. Alas, we are still stuck with his ideas.

Agreed Syed Ahmad Khan was right, when the entire South Asia was under the British rule. Now the world has changed. We are an independent nation now.
However I am support making English a co-official language of Pakistan. Because science and technology is written in that language. Urdu is important, because it is the unifying language.

They are - that is a fact. My well educated relatives studied at English medium. They also paid very expensive fees. Those funds help create a quality environment.

Simply changing from a mix of different curriculums and languages of teaching to a single one won't fix the disparity in society. The funding and resource gap must be addressed too.

In the UK children at state school and private school study the same curriculum. The private school children nearly all excel and always out do state schools Why? - huge funding difference.

Imran Khan is right to roll out a single curriculum but until the poor pendu kids get the same facilities as those in the posh schools - very little will change.

I come from the same system. And I have realized this English school system, the values it teaches, makes us mentally slave. Because it orients us to think that English is indispensable. It is not! Look at many European nations. Look at China. At Turkey. Their education system is in their language. Are they lagging anyone?

Also when we came here, local schools here encourage children to speak their native language at home. This is a suprise for many parents, coming from English medium school system, where we are encouraged to speak English at very young age. This is why parents in Pakistan proudly tell others that their kids cant speak Urdu. What shame! This is mental slavery at best.

There is a huge disparity between the well educated and the average person in Pakistan.
The upper elites in Pakistan speak English as their first language.

I have also kept in contact with expatriate communities in the West and in the Middle East like in the Emirates.

Valid point. Look at Japan, they do everything in their own language.

But we need to improve our economy first, to reach that level.

Most Turks cant speak proper English. They arent taught at schools. The language script was changed for other reasons. It was Ataturk effort to clean break modern Turkey from Ottoman moorings. He did not want Turkey to live in past. In that era, it was a correct decision.
