Afghan Army to train in India | StratPost

Wednesday, June 23, 2010
By Saurabh Joshi

The Indian Army is to provide basic training to officers and men of the Afghan National Army (ANA) in India. This training is expected to begin by August and will be conducted at various regimental training centers of the Indian Army, according to sources in the Indian Ministry of Defense.

The first batch of ANA personnel will consist of 25 officers and 30 Personnel Below Officer Rank (PBOR). Their training will also include certain specialized modules, especially in Counter Insurgency (COIN) warfare.

While ANA personnel have attended courses at Indian military training establishments before, this is the first time basic training is being provided to them. And while the first batch consists of 55 ANA personnel, it is unclear whether this number is likely to go up later and would depend on requests from the ANA, available vacancies in regimental training centers and Indian government policy.

This comes after US Defense Secretary Robert Gates asked the Indian National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore earlier this month to help provide training to the ANA.

This is also said to have been discussed in meetings between the ANA chief General Bismillah Khan Mohammadi and the Indian Army and the Ministry of Defense during his visit to New Delhi last July. India has so far been non-committal about sending training personnel to Afghanistan for this purpose, especially in light of the recurring attacks on Indian government officials and installations in Afghanistan, coupled with opposition from Pakistan to such an Indian

Great News for India ....Good relations with a Nations Army ...ensures good relations with Nation itself !!!

.
strategy against pakistan mind games but it will hurt india when afghanis implements them

Afghanistan do not have a modern military academy or training facilities. The country is also too unstable to build up these institutions. Sending them to India makes logic sense. They could have come to Pakistan instead if we had not created a mess in our faulty Afghan policy since 1976.

All this money spent in Afghanistan by India is wasted IMO. Indian can never play the role Pakistan does in Afghanistan or even close to it for a variety of reasons. Simple waste of good taxpayer money which can be spent wisely in India itself.

I'm getting sick of these comments about Afghans on here from Paks.

And I'm getting sick of seeing Indians act like they are Afghans best friends. Once Afghans are done using your resources/money (which is the only thing you people are good for), see what happens.

Nobody is an enemy of friend forever. Everybody acts on mutual interest. Even to act on mutual interest there should be some amount of belief. Which is prevalent between Afghan Government and India. Whereas this is absent between India and Pakistan or Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I am not discussing the reasons here. But this is the current situation. If you notice the people to people contact in border areas of AfPAK border. I believe its porous and people do have connections.

Why their is no other source of this important news on internet except this unpopular site?
BTW it is more of a blog then something else.

well its good but we should not happy with this Pakistan is doing its best to reduce Indian impact on Afghanistan

Afghanistan can play an important role in future

i feel for the sory condition of ANA. It needs a professional training. It has a huge job to do especially when the Nato will exit. India should carry on the task which will be left unfinished by the Nato ie. the training of ANA. Hope it brings something good for ANA..!
As long as indian engagement in Afghanistan is progress oriented and not hostile to its neighbors particularly Pakistan than nobody has any problem but that is very difficult to buy..!!!
