5 signs India won't become an economic power

To all outsiders who are mocking our economy for now mock us as much as you want since you wont get to do the same after 2014 when narendra modi will become pm

It is your own fellow Indians who are demonizing Modi, and slandering him to the point where it will be almost impossible for him to become the PM. They even call him a mass murderer on live TV... even though there is zero proof of such an accusation.

Meanwhile, this is how we treat Modi:

Okay for a while I accept that India would never become an economic superpower as the title of this thread goes!!So why is it bothering the Chinese, they should be happy infact??They are very well on their growth trajectory and all their GDP figures are genuine and everything is well there. And as far as the question of India becoming a so called Suuppaaa powaa is concerned India never wants to be one in the first place.History teaches us that when a country tries hard to become something rather than to try and develop the conditions of its people it ends up like the USSR. . . Sports come at the top of the agenda winning becomes more of an objective rather than participating and all that.It becomes more important as to how the other nations perceive u rather than how ur own people feel about their country and there are many many more signs. In India people have the right to work hard and make a living and it should not really matter to the rest of the world how much thy are making!!Yes it is true that if our Political leadership had been a bit honest than the countries development had not had faced so many hurdles and maybe the PCI had been much more higher. One more thing that I would like to point out is that threads of these sort only goes on to show how insecure the Chinese feel about India's rise otherwise why would they be so much concerned about what would India become 20-200 yrs from now.Well my reply is be rest assured my Han friends. . . .India would always be a peaceful nation. It's the land of the Buddha where nearly 60% of the population is vegetarian.A countries objective should be to appease its own people rather than overwhelming Western nations with eight lane roads and useless flyovers!!

I still cannot understand how in this troubled times when nations are going bankrupt a 6% growth is considered bad.
Because they want every one to follow the economic model of a particular country where u will have to achieve a double digit growth figure even if u have to build Ghost Cities and empty mall's.

The concept is about competing with the US of A rather than the ell being of its own people!!

India is growing at 5% of a small base economy (1.5 trillion).

Whereas even America growing at only 1%... of 15 trillion, is adding more than twice as much to their economy every year as India is.

do u remember how many times u ve written this? ..simply copy paste kya..lol..

India sees itself as a country on the rise, but stubborn obstacles — including endemic corruption and political gridlock — suggest that it might fall short of its promise

“As Victor Hugo once said, ‘No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come.' I suggest to this august house that the emergence of India as a major economic power in the world happens to be one such idea." With those words to the Indian parliament in 1991, then-Finance Minister Manmohan Singh introduced a raft of reforms that loosened his government's stranglehold over the market and sparked years of economic growth that lifted millions out of poverty. Singh, a soft-spoken technocrat, built on those reforms after becoming prime minister in 2004, and until only recently it was a given that India "was on an inexorable road to becoming a global power," says Simon Denyer at The Washington Post. But since winning a second term in 2009, Singh's fortunes have turned — and there are serious doubts that his country, the world's largest democracy, can fulfill its potential. Here, 5 signs India may not become an economic power:

1. The economy is slowing
India's economy grew at a rate of 5.5 percent in the latest quarter, a marked slowdown from the blistering 10 percent pace it was setting a couple of years ago. While most countries — including the U.S. — could only dream of a 5.5 percent rate, India "needs to stay on a high-growth path to pull hundreds of millions" of people out of poverty, says Krista Mahr at TIME. Two-thirds of India's 1.2 billion people live on less than $2 a day, and more than 500 million Indians are under the age of 25, meaning the government "needs to figure out how to guarantee those millions a future of long, gainful employment," says Mahr. If the economy continues to lumber along, those millions in poverty could begin to strain the country's resources and prevent a jump to greater prosperity.

2. Corruption
Corruption is rampant in India, from the top echelons of government to the local police demanding bribes, and many Indians feel that "political parties and their representatives are nothing more than obstacles to doing business," says Erich Follath at Der Spiegel. Singh's government has been wracked by corruption scandals, with opponents accusing officials in his Congress Party of giving sweet deals to politically connected corporations in the telecommunications and coal industries, which ended up costing the government tens of billions of dollars in revenue. The penchant for corruption is a turnoff for foreign companies, and even aid programs for the poor have been hijacked. "On the long road between greedy politicians in New Delhi and corrupt local officials, the money tends to disappear before it reaches the poor," says Follath.

3. Political paralysis
Opposition parties in recent weeks have been hammering Singh over the coal scandal, suspending all parliamentary activity for days running. Similar paralysis accompanied outrage over the telecommunications scandal. In addition, Singh barely has control over his own coalition, which represents "interests from many corners of the vast country" and "has grown particularly unwieldy," says Kahr. With tensions running high, little business has been done since Singh's second term began.

4. Reform has stalled
With the corruption scandals and parliamentary gridlock, the government has failed to pass far-reaching reforms that are considered necessary to catapult India to the next stage of development, such as ending wasteful subsidies and reducing barriers to foreign investment. "It's very clear that it is misgovernance that is holding India back from realizing its potential and blunting its competitive edge," says FirstPost in an editorial. India is falling farther and farther behind in basic areas that need to be improved: "Transport, communication, and energy." The country received a stark reminder of that earlier this summer, when a massive electrical blackout left 700 million people without power.

5. Singh hasn't come through
Singh, who was "once so eager to bring about reform, seems exhausted and tired of his position," says Follath. He has refused to "stick his neck out on reforms that will continue the process of liberalization he helped start," says Kahr. And while he has not been accused of corruption himself, he has steadily developed a reputation as "a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government," says Denyer. If he doesn't turn things around soon, Singh "is in danger of going down in history as a failure."

So Indians are the ones who care about the well-being of their people?

Let's take a country that a lot of Indians here on this forum like to make fun of, for doing a bad job for their people. North Korea.

North Korea has a life expectancy above the world average. India's life expectancy is far below the world average.

North Korea has lower malnutrition rates than India does, lower Maternal mortality ratios, better access to water and sanitation, far higher literacy rates, etc. In fact, in North Korea almost 100% of people have access to a toilet, whereas in India the majority of the population do not.

So, even despite the obvious failure of North Korea, they still beat India on most social development indicators.

Oh yes why not even tiny countries like Qatar does a lot better then China in terms of these indicators... they have no poverty unlike the Chinese millions. so lets remove china from security council and put Qatar into it.

Yeah as if there is free flow of information from inside this country.

As for malnurition, kindly explain this

Military Fails to Feed Itself

North Korea is trying to combat malnutrition among its soldiers by encouraging them to raise livestock and grow enough food for themselves but the effort has met with little success.

Half of North Korea's army 'starving' - Telegraph

So inspite of having a military first policy, North Korean soldiers are malnourished (so one can imagine the situation of civilians) so much so that the minimum required height had to be lowered by NK authorities and you are saying that NK is better off than India in malnourishment dept.

Your brain farts is getting nauseating.

Only 5 sings?

If there are only 5 sings which is saying India wont be super power its really good and easy for us to handle.

Because there are plenty of signs which say that India will be one of the Super Power.

Whatever Pakistan Instead of worrying about India will or Will not become super power, They should think about if they can reach to Half of India level

Why Qatar..if compared on a % basis Taiwan is better off than PRC.So better give back the UNSC seat back to Taiwan.

Except for western media, no one wants India to become a super power including GoI. i would be very happy if India becomes another France...a country who sees world through their own prism and is not afraid to say no even to a super power.

20 years from now or 20 years from when Pakistan moves out of LOW HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CATEGORY of United Nations.. Or when Pakistan's rank makes it to double figures (from 124) in the global competitiveness Index ;) ??
