The information on Syrian army casualties, meanwhile, came from a Syrian officer who defected from the forward operating base in Tal Abyad between the first and second set of Turkish strikes, and who briefed rebel fighters late last night, according to Ayham al-Khalaf, a spokesman with the local province's rebel media office.

This officer said 14 soldiers—including a colonel and a first lieutenant—were killed and two were critically injured. Twenty-three other soldiers were injured in the attacks, the officer said, according to Mr. Khalaf.

Four security cars, an armored personnel carrier and a tank were also destroyed, he said. Local rebels estimate some 250 members of the Syrian army were at the artillery base, which was set up after rebels took control of the Tal Abyad border crossing late last month.

Turkey strikes Syria again after mortar bomb falls in Hatay

5 October 2012 / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,
Turkish authorities have said Turkish army fired back at targets in Syria in a third straight day after a mortar shell fell in a non-residential area in southern Turkish province of Hatay amid cross-border attacks this week.

Hatay Governor Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz told reporters on Friday that a mortar shell fell in Aapulluyaz village of Yaylada district, 50 meters away from the Syria border and Turkish army immediately fired back at targets within Syria. The governor said there were no causalities.

A Syrian shell struck a Turkish border town Wednesday and killed five civilians. Turkey retaliated with artillery strikes and warned Syria that it would not tolerate such a spillover again.

Turkish artillery bombarded Syrian military targets on Wednesday and Thursday in response, killing several Syrian soldiers, and the Turkish parliament has authorized cross-border military action in the event of further aggression.

A Turkish official said Syria has pulled tanks and other military equipment away from its border with Turkey following deadly cross-border shelling this week.

Turkeys state-run news agency Anatolia also reported that Turkey fired back at Syria on Thursday night after another mortar shell fell in Altnözü district of Hatay.

The cross-border violence was the most serious so far in the conflict, now in its 19th month, and underscored how it could flare across the region.

Turkey, once an Assad ally and now a leading voice in cals for him to quit, shelters more than 90,000 Syrian refugees in camps on its territory and has allowed rebel army leaders sanctuary.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the revolt against Assad, which began with peaceful street protests but is now a full-scale civil war also fought on sectarian lines.

Across the country about 180 people were killed in violence on Thursday, including 48 government soldiers, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Aww great- all that needed to be done now is to fire few more mortars into turkey and turkey might retaliate fully-
What a great way to make two muslim countries go to war with each other-

I am sure there would be few Mosad guys that will love to do a false flag mortar shelling on turkey to ignite a war-
I pitty muslims to be honest- let them all die-

.
Asad has poked into the wrong neighbor, he will realize that soon enough if he is stupid enough to go to war with Turkey.

Turkey is part of NATO; attack on one is an attack on all members of NATO.

Assad dogs thought Turkey would do nothing again. Or that is my guess.

Not any more, one more wrong move and the big guns will give them a royal pounding.
