NEW DELHI: As many as 34 persons, including 11 serving and retired armed force personnel and one serving BSF personnel, have been arrested over the past three years on charges of spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

As per statistics furnished by the home ministry in reply to a Rajya Sabha question on Wednesday, 20 civilians and two foreigners, including a Sri Lankan and a Pakistani, were placed under arrest between 2013 and 2015 for passing on information to the ISI.

Minister of state for home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary told Elders that 14 persons have been arrested for alleged espionage on behalf of ISI so far this year. They include 5 serving/retired armed force personnel, 1 serving BSF personnel, 7 civilians and 1 Pakistani.

In 2014, 7 persons, including 4 serving/retired armed force personnel, two civilians and a Sri Lankan, were arrested on similar charges. The 13 persons arrested in 2013 on charges of espionage for ISI included 2 serving/retired armed force personnel and 11 civilians.

Elaborating on the recent arrest of a BSF personnel for allegedly passing on information to the Pakistani agency, Chaudhary said an FIR was registered against him on November 16, 2015, under the Official Secrets Act, 1923. "During the course of neutralization of Pak espionage modules between the period 2013-15 (till date), 34 accused have been arrested under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act, 1923," he said.

Citing the assessment of the intelligence agencies, the minister claimed no significant information pertaining to core issues of national security was compromised by the security force personnel arrested for allegedly spying for the ISI, "since most of them were low-ranking personnel with no access to such information".

Counter espionage operations are part of the job. I do not know how many Pakistan has caught, but if none, then it means ISIs counter espionage is weak.

Quite a number, from what I've seen. Planting spies and catching enemy spies is all a part of the great game between India and Pakistan.

We have caught many and many are in Jail for decades and you only admit that they were your people when either we send their dead body back or are freed after decades

Pakistan catches alot, one was authorized for a live interview with a journalist.

Most of Pakistani spies are local sunni muslims. Indian army needs thorough background check on them.
