India to build second aircraft carrier

yes but what I meant is to develop this system and when it is completed, instal it on AC. Till the time steam catapults will do the job.

Once constructed with steam catapults, you can't simply strip down the carrier to install EMALS. Constructing another carrier will be cheaper than redesigning the existing one.

Sorry I couldn't understand ur post ... I agree with you. First make basic system and then add advance technology to it. I know Indian Navy is pragmatic (and not A$$h0le like IA and IAF) They will go for Indian machine even it clear 90% of given criteria...

I like the attitude of IN over NLCA. IN was furious on DRDO/HAL They bash them left and right of delay. This kind of attitude shows the sentiment of IN.

Its will take years to develop even england depends on catapult technology given by USA.
So without wasting time we should try to get EMALS from america.
They are willing to give us anything we want at present :usflag:

Buying is good option, But we have to make sure that USA don't pull our leg at last instance. Imagine, our AC is complete and USA denied to give EMALS?? :what:

a joint venture on EMALS will get the tech.

What about delays?

will vikrant be able to carry 30 fighter planes excluding rotatary wing......................
Is there any similarities between our vikrant and Italy's cavour AC..........

yes it will carry 30 aircrafts (mig 29k + NLCA), yes there are similarities b'coz Italian firm was the design consultant for the ship.

as per the data available, 29 mig 29s or tejas and 10 sea kings can be accommodated.
yes there are little similarities due to some collaboration with italy in development of it

Vikrant (262X60 meter) will be bigger than Cavour (244X39 meter). Vikrant will carry 40 machine while the other carries 20 machines (Fighter and Helo). Cavour has modifying to carry 16 F35..

Fincantieri didn't design INS Vikrant. Fincantieri was used as a design consultant for integrating the propulsion system. Both the Cavour and Vikrant uses 4 General Electric LM2500 engines.

While a Russian firm, NDB, is contributing aviation technology.

The shipyard designed it.

dealing with USA is sometimes like putting your hand in a beehive, you may get what you want but in return you have to pay back double in other terms as per the conditions the US puts while dealing.

well this technology is still under development and I am sure we are not getting it in the next 7-8 years. But if you start it now then there are chances to get it on time. But from where is the point. I do not know if Russians are trying their hand on emal system

Maximize it and see the Italian Job... :)

India plans to build its second indigenous aircraft carrier after the first one becomes operational by 2015 -16.

The first one – 40,000 tonnes Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 (IAC-1) – is being constructed at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) since 2009 and is expected to be inducted by 2017.

Subsequently, CSL will undertake construction of the second carrier, which will be bigger than the first one.

“The indigenous aircraft carrier programme is planned to be a continuing process over the next decade as Indian Navy aims to have at least two fully operational and combat worthy carriers available at any given time,” Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said in his talk at the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London on Monday.

With India’s lone carrier INS Viraat at the fag end of its career, Navy is set to receive Russian-origin INS Vikramaditya in December to boost its capability.

The IAC-1 will be launched in water by 2013 and may start sea-trials by 2016. The programme is almost two and half years behind schedule as the target launch date was 2010. As the Navy’s long-term perspective plan envisages having three carrier battle groups, the CSL will start building IAC-2 once the work on the first one is over. A must to have in the repository to be projected as a powerful maritime nation, a carrier battle group is a small flotilla of warships at the core of which lie an aircraft carrier.

Verma said Navy’s induction programme was structured in such a way that every year over the next 5 years, as many as five ships and submarines would be inducted if shipyards deliver the platforms on contract schedule.

India to build second aircraft carrier

too optimistic

anyway second carrier may weigh between 50 to 60 thousand tons

The shipyard designed it.

I Think it is indian navy's Ship designing team which designed it and not the shipyard. CSL is one of the best shipyards in terms of attaining timely handover. Delays which affected IAC are mainly attributed to Steel and some newly designed subsytems and their mating. If the subsytems are going to be the same and major issues do not happen then we defenitely can see IAC-2 on time. CSL is committed to its customers and thats the main reason IAC 1 was taken out of the shipyard to build other ships which it was committed to.

Since it is modular construction most of the blocks should be under construction and shouldn't take too much time to finish
