Army chief is visiting Beijing to enhance bilateral military relations, says ISPR

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has arrived in China on a four-day official visit, the military’s media wing said on Monday.

“COAS is on a four day official visit to China for enhancing bilateral military relations,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a brief statement.

No further details were provided.

In January this year, Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir travelled to Saudi Arabia and the UAE on his first official visit abroad since his appointment. According to the ISPR, the army chief undertook the visit from January 4 to 10.

Last week, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif lauded COAS Gen Asim Munir's efforts for securing financial commitments from friendly countries, one of the last conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for restoring its lending.

What is important here is the chronological order,

Who did he visit first ?
and who met him first,

China, being a next door neighbor, that too with such deep strategic ties was not the first on both those counts.

COAS Munir’s four-day visit to China includes a series of meetings with military leaders aimed at strengthening the longstanding relations between the two armed forces, the military’s media affairs wing said.

These inaugural meetings are expected to be followed by further discussions on enhancing military cooperation and promoting greater collaboration in the areas of defence and security, it added.

This is COAS Munir’s fourth overseas visit ever since he took charge as the army chief. Earlier this year, he undertook a week-long official visit to UAE and Saudi Arabia and held meetings with the top leadership of the Gulf states.

During the visit, the officials reviewed Pakistan’s bilateral ties with the two countries and discussed ways to strengthen the relations.

Later in February, the COAS visited the United Kingdom for meetings on defence-related issues. He also attended a conference at Wilton Park, an executive agency created by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office to foster open dialogue between governments.
