LAHORE: An Ahmadi place of worship was set ablaze in Jhelum on Saturday, a day after an unbridled mob burnt down a factory owned by members of the Ahmadiyya community in the same area after one of its employees was accused of committing blasphemy.

According to reports, hundreds of people surrounded a chipboard factory and set the facility ablaze after reports surfaced that one employee had allegedly desecrated the Holy Quran.

Local clerics made provocative speeches against Ahmadis, causing the enraged mob to resort to violence.

Police officials claimed to have arrested a member of the Ahmadiyya community Friday night, after which he was put under judicial remand.

According to sources, an FIR was registered against the accused under blasphemy charges after locals of the area accused him of burning pages of the Holy Quran.

“About 80% of the factory, Pakistan Chipboard Factory, has been destroyed along with six residences in the factory,” spokesperson of Jamat-e-Ahmadia Saleemudin told The Express Tribune. He added that all workers and residents were safe.

“Ahmadi families have fled the area to save their lives, leaving their houses at the mercy of the unbridled mob.”

Further, the spokesperson added that the incident occurred in the presence of the police, which was unable to control the enraged mob.

Saleemudin further added that a wave of fear has gripped the community. “If the police does not take stern action against the perpetrators, there are chances of them burning down the houses of the Ahmadis too,” he said, while pointing out that none of the attackers have been arrested so far.

Meanwhile, Mujahid Akbar Khan, District Police Officer Jehlum, told The Express Tribune, ”Last night, the police used the most amount of force it has to control the mob.” The DPO also said that the news of the place of worship being burnt down can only be confirmed once he reaches the sight where the place of worship is located.

The mob managed to set the factory on fire despite the presence of heavy contingents of police and Rangers being present at the site.

Police were unable to disperse the protesters despite using tear gas and Rangers had to be called in for support.
The police did, however, arrest three members of the community.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya spokesperson said three Ahmadis were arrested without reason. The spokesman added that he wasn’t sure as to whether those trapped inside the factory had been rescued.

Jhelum DPO Mujahid Akbar Khan was unavailable for comment despite several attempts to reach him.

JHELUM / ISLAMABAD:
Authorities called out the army on Saturday to quell violent protests triggered by allegations of blasphemy against employees of a factory in the northern Punjab district of Jhelum.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan ordered deployment of the army in aid of the civil administration to maintain law and order in Jhelum, the interior ministry said in a statement. Nobody will be allowed to take the law into their own hands, the minister said.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also convened a high-level meeting, where he ordered an investigation into the matter. “All necessary steps should be taken to maintain law and order in Jhelum,” he said, according to a series of short messages on microblogging site Twitter by an official of the provincial government.

The chief minister also directed the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order to visit Jhelum and review the situation. It all started Friday night when a mob gathered outside the Pakistan Chipboard Factory on GT Road, alleging that an employee inside had desecrated the Holy Quran. The mob then set fire to the factory, though no one was injured as all the workers had been evacuated by the time, sources said.

When District Police Officer (DPO) Mujahid Akbar Khan failed to negotiate an end to the protest, paramilitary rangers were called in to disperse the mob and clear the main artery.

A Rescue 1122 official told The Express Tribune Saturday evening that firefighters were struggling to douse the fire that has been raging on since Friday night. The amount of incendiary plywood, a raw material for chipboard, inside the factory was causing difficulty in putting out the fire.

Speaking off-the-record, the official said residential units on the factory premises were also gutted by the fire. Rescue teams from neighbouring Gujrat district were called in to help extinguish the fire.

Persisting tensions outside the factory also hampered rescue efforts. Rescuers had to abandon their operation as a mob gathered again on Saturday and set fire to a place of worship of the Ahmadiyya community in the Kala Gujran neighbourhood.

A senior official of the Punjab police, however, claimed the situation has been brought under control as angry protesters started shouting slogans in favour of the army soon after their deployment.

A deputy reader to the DPO told The Express Tribune the factory is owned by a member of the Ahmadiyya community. The security in-charge in the factory, who is also an Ahmadi, was accused of desecrating the Holy Quran, he said, adding that an FIR has been registered and the accused arrested.

The local head of the Anjuman Ahmadiyya Pakistan, however, denied the blasphemy allegations. In a statement, he said that people were instigated against the Ahmadi factory owner using false allegations of blasphemy. Around 70% of the factory and eight vehicles were gutted in the arson attack, he added.

Jhelum Riots: Army called in after mob sets fire to Ahmadiyya Mosque | Rabwah Times

A mob torched the homes of several Ahmadiyya families and an Ahmadiyya Mosque in Pakistan's Jhelum district on Saturday. The incident came just a day after a mob burnt down a factory owned by Ahmadiyya Muslims in the same area.

The Mosque which is located in Kala Gujran area of Jhelum was being guarded by local police when the mob broke through the security cordon, which was established to safeguard the Mosque, following Friday night’s unrest.

The crowd pelted stones at the Police personnel and in response Police baton charged and tear gassed the protesters in order to bring the situation under control, but were unable to do so.
As tensions rose, a contingent of the Pakistan Army was called in to assist the local police forces.

After the arrival of the army contingent, the situation calmed down, with the mob chanting slogans in favour of the army.

Earlier, an enraged mob set fire to a chipboard factory owned by members of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The factory was set ablaze late Friday night after rumours circulated in the area and announcements were made from Mosques levelling blasphemy allegations on the factory owner and workers.

In wake of the anti-Ahmadiyya riots, Pakistan's Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has ordered deployment of the army in aid of the civil administration to maintain law and order in Jhelum. In addition, Punjab's Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif directed the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order to visit Jhelum and review the situation.

A statement from the Ahmadiyya Muslim community termed the incident "a monstrous plan, an attempt to burn Ahmadis alive". District police chief Mujahid Afsar said authorities were trying to negotiate between the communities, but the atmosphere was still violent.

And, in what seems to be a first, several Pakistani politicians and celebrities condemned the attack and showed solidarity with Ahmadiyya Muslims.

Act of violence should not be tolerated, if they have any issue register a complaint against it, no matter what is the situation taking law into own hands not allowed hope Govt will take strict actions against the culprits.

Sad incident
I believe human values getting low day by day in sub continent, our neighbors go down day by day on moral values and we are becoming more intolerant.
