Zardari owes his victory to people, democracy
ISLAMABAD, Sep 6 (APP): Newly elected President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday termed his victory as the “success of people and democracy.” Zardari gave the statement after he secured the highest number of votes from the National Assembly and the Senate to become Pakistan’s next President.
Asif Zardari secured 281 votes, Justice (rtd) Saeeduzaman Siddique 111 votes and Mushahid Hussain Sayed 34 votes, out of total 436 votes, of which 10 were declared invalid in the Parliament.

He secured 162 votes in Sindh Assembly, 107 in NWFP, and 59 in Balochistan Assembly, while the Punjab Assembly results are still awaited.

Zardari wins 100 percent votes from Sindh Assembly
KARACHI, Sept 6 (APP): Presidential candidate and Co-chairman PPP, Asif Ali Zardari bagged 100 percent votes from his native Province’s Sindh Assembly. Asif Zardari bagged 162 votes out of 163 cast in the house of 166 with one vote declared invalid. The result was announced by Presiding Officer, Chief Justice Sindh High Court, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali immediately after the counting was over.

As soon as the Presiding Officer announced the result, the house burst into slogans of “Jiay Bhutto” and all the members hugged and congratulated each other.

The three MPAs who did not cast their votes were former chief minister Dr. Arbab Ghulam Rahim (PML-Q) who was in Dubai, Mir Nadir Ali Magsi (PPP) who has gone to Balochistan and Dr. Mohammed Ali Shah (MQM) who too has gone abroad.

All the 8 MPAs of PML-F, led by Jam Madad Ali, came to house during the final half- an- hour and cast their vote.

The three members of National Peoples Party of Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi also cast their votes earlier.

In the house of 166, not a single vote was cast in favour of any of the other two presidential candidates Sayed Mushahid Hussain and Justice (Rtd) Saeeduzzaman Siddiqi.

Bhutto's widower wins presidency bbc
Mr Zardari was thrust into centre stage by his wife's death
Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, has won a sweeping victory in Pakistan's presidential election.

The election was called after Pervez Musharraf resigned rather than risk being impeached.

Mr Zardari faces severe economic problems and a rampant Islamist insurgency that are threatening Pakistan's stability.

During the voting a bomb killed at least 15 people near Peshawar city.

The president is elected by secret ballots in the national and four provincial assemblies.

Mr Zardari won 481 votes out of 702, far more than the 352 votes that would have guaranteed him victory, leaving his two rivals trailing far behind.

In Sindh province, Mr Zardari won all 65 votes. In North West Frontier Province (NWFP) he got 56 out of the 65 votes. In Balochistan province he won 59 of the 65 votes.

By contrast he only won 22 out of 65 seats in Punjab province, the heartland of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's PML-N party.

The two daughters of Mr Zardari and Ms Bhutto hugged friends in delight in the gallery of the national assembly as the results became clear. Members of Mr Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) declared the result to be a "victory for democracy".

this would require a class revolution like the french revolution. these people are a curse to our country!

Hounrable fatman17 sir,
I am agreed with points mentioned, above in the post from hounrable NEO.
But let me add a littile bit, 1 thing should be rememberd or learnt from our recnt history, which is that! any kind of westrn ideology(FRENCH REVOLUTION) or theory cant make any wonders in pakistan or for the betterment of poor, & uneducated , emotional pakistani nation.

Again, i would like to put chinese success story, as an example for pakistan.
ISLAMIC SOCIALISM is the key of success to pakistan, our scholars and thinkers should try to find a system with the blend of islam.
WHICH can provide baisc essiantials to a common man, who doesnt have any way out, and who is ready to make sucide bomb attacks just to earn money to feed his family.

I , guss islamic socialism is far more achiveble, far more success full, far more fruitable system , to satisfy the needs of common man in pakistan.
as it was mentioned, in many of presented points by our hounrable NEO, it is the best start, but we just dont need only a good start? what ever MUSHARAF did in his early days or in his start, i mean..(7 points agenda), but then slowly he was been failed by the berucracy in the west for thier vested intersts.we need fast and random and uncompromisble stance, and a spirt of marathon to achive the targets for our progress.:smitten::pakistan::sniper:..:usflag:

They are no more 10bn$ as some post here indicated, i think they stand at 6bn$ now. I was surprised when Shireen Rehman said that 60m$ of Zardari will be added to foreign reserves. Crap.

Zardari thinks that foreign reserves is his money just in another bank account. So he won't mind putting his corruption earned 60m$ in foreign reserves. :agree:

Also Zardari's utilization of foreign reserves is 2bn$ / month or 2 months.

I am sure Interceptor is a happy lad today. PPP President, PPP PM, a judiciary favorably disposed towards the government, the ability to appoint their hand- picked CoAS after Kiyani retires in 2 years....how much more mandate would PPP need to deliver what they have been promising to the wretched poor of Pakistan for the past 30 plus years?

If the PPP cannot do what it has been promising for decades then its the end of the PPP after this term. What remains of Pakistan after they are done with the country remains debatable, however Zardari and company need to get working post haste. Bohut haraam khory ho chukee for the past 6 months having delivered nothing (well they had all the excuses under the sun including one that claimed an interfering President...so how about now?).

The economic policy is on auto-pilot right now...absolutely zero correction, FOREX reserves are getting depleted massively (because this government has not done ANYTHING to invite FDI back into the country). I just hope that there is at least ONE person in the entire PPP team who understands what failure at this juncture means for the PPP (I would not say Pakistan because for many in the PPP, party is primary, all else is secondary). So maybe in the hopes of keeping the survival of the party in mind, they may do something that would help Pakistan...am I being overly optimistic here?

Please refrain from this sort of language.

No responses to his post please.

As pessimistic as I am, I do have one hope that this is all part of growing pains. The concern that I have with going through this crap is, what will be its impact on Pakistan?

I have no idea about the future of Pakistan under Zardari, its quite possible that through deft diplomacy (he is not known for much outside of Pakistan) and shrewd tactics, Zardari may be able to do what no other Pakistani leader has been able to do, however the odds are stacked up against him. Legally he is the President of Pakistan and now the onus is on him to lead Pakistan. Maybe there is a need for a mindset change in Mr. Zardari. Its no longer about lining own pockets, rather about the fate of 160 million people. I hope President Zardari is up to the challenge. Also of note is the fact that having such a strong personality in the Presidency with all of the powers of the previous President intact, the Prime Minister of Pakistan is really a big, lame duck now. Given Gilani's lackluster performance and inability to impress domestic and foreign partners, this may not be a bad thing. But on the downside, with this setup the entire slogan "power is with the parliament and the PM" is debunked.
