Yunus 'siphoned Tk 7bn aid for poor'

Dr. Yunus should be away from politics and people should not go just after a name or a fame. To work as financier and to work as a politician are two different categories of jobs. A doctorate or micr-financing background are not enough to become a politician.

Rather, people with vision should come to politics. A businessman should remain in business and profit. I can remember Thaksin of Thailand, who was a total failure as a PM, but was a success in business.

I agree with you. A transition from business/Non-profit to Govt. is not always successful. It requires an ability to connect to the common people. Politics is dirty business. Backstabbing is a very useful experience in politics, as the saying goes, "Politics makes strange bed fellows."

A Ph. D, even from Vanderbilt certainly doesn't teach you that.

I doubt Dr. Yunus has the stomach to be dragged through the gutters as so happens in politics. Thats why I commnented it would be huge and pleasently surprising news if he decides to enter the political arena.

Dr Md Yunus welcomes Prime Minister calling for investigation

Reported on: December 05, 2010 23:11 PM

Dhaka, Dec 5 (UNB) - Nobel Laureate Dr Mohammat Yunus has welcomed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s call for an investigation into the reported diversion of fund of the Grameen Bank.

In a brief statement tonight Dr Yunus said : The PM has called for an investigation into the press reports that have surfaced recently with regard to Grameen Bank. I welcome such initiative and I am confident that this will resolve the matter and bring the truth to the citizens of Bangladesh as soon as possible.

The statement was issued to the media by Grameen Bank general manager M Shahjahan.

The Prime Minister earlier today told a press conference that there must be an extensive investigation to find out if there was any unauthorized fund transfer by Dr Yunus…. People should know what has been going on in the name of poverty alleviation and with the fate of poor.

Indian Prime Minister criticizes Prof. Yunus

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has harshly criticized Prof. Yunus in recent remarks about Grameen fund handling. Manmohan Singh statement about Yunus is starkly similar to what Hasina already made comment about Prof. Yunus. This is perhaps the first foreign head of government made statement about Yunus. This is also important to notice that Yunus factor or negative campaign on his activity is important for India and its policy that journalist has asked question and Indian Prime Minister overreached to give comment.

In rough translation here is what Manmohan Singh said:

"Bangladesh has made many examples. Taking people money and cheating them is also one such example. Money was brought in for poor people but money was sucked out of them. There was nothing done for poor people."

Why Indian minister criticize him? If professor Yonus did anything wrong that entirely BD's business. Why the hell Bharati always put their nose into our matter is beyond my comprehension. They should get life for a change.

GB has grown substantially over the years. Yunus maybe feels he can move around within the greater organization. If the allegations are true, then all he did is moved funds from one unit to another, unless the other unit is a shell organization or a company like many large organizations have.

On a side note a few years ago he was demanding that Norwegians hand over majority control of Grameen Phone to GB. He claimed there was a verbal agreement that allows for that handover.

The article and the upcoming movie just maybe a payback. This also maybe the drum-rolls for an upcoming fight.

The following excerpts are from 2006,

Nobel Laureate Yunus says Telenor is*taking from poor - Dec. 5, 2006

That was my post from a few days ago. It would be interesting to see who funded the documentry/movie !!

She pobably considers BNP a thing in the past, likely sees Yunus as a credible political threat.

This is unlikely. I cant believe Manmohan can use harsh words, he does not even criticize his opponents within India using these words. Can somebody verify in other BD newspapers.
I cannot find the news anywhere else.

The drumrolls are everywhere now.

Interesting, GB website is not available.

Indian PM has no right to criticize Dr. Yunus. The latter may have done some mistakes in the management of money, but he is also trying to uplift the status of the poors in many countries that also include India. But, Dr. Singh is crticizing him in such a rough and harsh language as if he is his personal enemy.

Indian politicians, bureaucrats and rich people do not want the welfare of their poor masses. Because a social awareness may not allow these three groups to exploit the poors at random. Dr. Yunus' activities take care of the welfare of the poors. But, these activities at the same time also create awareness of the rights of the poors. So, he has become a common enemy of the upper-class establishments in both BD and India.

EastWatch, why did you quote me when you did not seem to read what I wrote. I said it is unlikely that Manmohan criticized Yunus.

Can you give me a source from a standard BD newspaper( like dailystar). Indian PM will not criticize the work of a BD citizen done in BD. And frankly, he is too busy fighting his fire( too many fires)

Interesting, GB website is not available.

There may be incriminating evidence there so they are removing the evidence before the investigation. I found a lot of negative information a few days ago on several of their websites.

The Yunus controversy

A report was published recently titled ‘Yunus siphoned Tk 7 bn aid for poor’ in the leading newspapers. Interestingly enough, one of the leading dailies of the country decided to publish the news a day later. The justification was that they wanted to verify the information prior to publishing the news. However, while publishing the news in an article form on Friday, this newspaper failed to portray both sides of the story. Rather, the tone of the article seemed to defend the rationale behind his fund transfer. Clearly, the article wants to divert the readers’ attention from the real issue. The question is not whether the fund transferred to a different entity was used for the poor. The question is whether the legal agreement allowed Yunus to transfer the money this way.
If Yunus is so clear about his justification, why didn’t he inform the donor agency prior to the fund transfer? It is also interesting that nowhere in the article any question is raised about the donor agency which later complied with Yunus’s request to compromise the agreement. This is important from the viewpoint of transparency and accountability and the citizens of the donor country have a right to know about such transfers of grant money. So, when question is raised about Yunus breaching the agreement, equal attention should also be given to raise concern about the compromise made by the officials of that donor agency. A responsible journalist should ask whether the donor has the authority to make such a compromise with grant money for which they are accountable to their taxpayers and whether the compromise made by the donor was permissible by the laws of their country. If not, the people should demand an answer from officials of the agency. Journalists should not forget to raise this aspect in their reporting.
I am also concerned about the timing of the news release. Why is this being disclosed after 18 years? Surely it has been known for long by all the actors concerned. Recently, Yunus started raising concerns about Telenor, a Norwegian Telecom, regarding a violation of a gentleman’s agreement on GrameenPhone’s share. My guess is that the interested party considered this the right time to threaten him to silence by bringing up something he had done in the past and reminding how he was protected at that time by the concerned agency.
It is strongly recommended that responsible journalism should not forget to highlight the other side of the coin while criticising Yunus and microcredit.

What type of news portal is this?
This would be international news and prominent papers like Daily star would also cover it in Bangladesh.

The fact that no one can find it anywhere else means that the credibility of this news portal is low.

Here is the same news of Manmohan Singh criticizm of prof. Yunus (at the end of the article) from indian Bengali daily pratidin. But now that indian game is caught there will be plenty of excuse and diversion.

This is prcisely my point. This was a dead issue, even the Norweigean Ambassador and NORAD accepted his explanation and moved on 13 years ago. Somebody is looking for dirt, given the huffin and puffin from Hasina, she is looking more like the prime suspect.

EastWatch: At least use your own common sense (if not research) before commenting on such a topic.

Do you really believe , a state of head -- and a noted economist like Dr.Singh , will comment on Mr.Yunus and that too with the harsh words attributed to him?

For records, Yunus is not treated as our enemy .. if anything, Dr.Singh sought Dr.Yunus help in Microfinance.

Maybe check out this links:

Dr.Singh seeks Dr.Yunus help in Microfinance:
The Hindu : National : Yunus: Manmohan sought advice on micro-credit

Dr.Yunus in Indian Parliament:
:The Daily Star: Internet Edition

The post was just one more example of BD paranoia. Grow up , if you can.
