Dry onions are always good, it never spoil so quickly.

So, what is pushing up prices?

First, unseasonal rains and hailstorms in March and April damaged the rabi crop affecting supplies. The July-September period is the lean period for onion production. The demand during this period is met from rabi (summer stocks). The unseasonal rains meant that stored rabi onions have nearly halved to 1.4 million tonnes.

The domestic demand for onions is about 15 million tonnes a year. In a normal year, India produces about 18-20 million tonnes year. In the last onion crop year (June 2014-July 2015), the domestic production stood at 18.9 million tonnes, marginally lower than the previous year’s 19.4 million tonnes.

The rains and hailstorms, however, have dealt a blow to the winter harvest, which accounts for about 55% of the total production, damaging significant amount of stocks. Separately, inconsistent rains in the main onion producing states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have delayed planting of the kharif crop.

Lol Pakistani people here jumping around on exporting onions to India.
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
Seriously?
Okay let megive you a real analysis.
According to figures the India Pakistan trade remains at 12 to 13 billion dollar which is done by Dubai route.
And the India has 90 to 95% contribution of the trade and reamaining 10 to 5% is of Pakistan.
So first ask yourself a question why Pakistan is importing so much from India which holds your jugular vein?
It's not business, it is politics. The government needs to pacify the rising price of the onions-an important commodity for the food of the piss poor millions of India. By bringing the price down, even if they have to import from Pakistan, they get to keep their votes.

On the other hand, keeping the DI issue alive and blaming Pakistan, also keeps them votes.

So basically, that is how important Pakistan is to the Indian government and people.

@Areesh It's just business. Pakistani traders do the same thing too. For example, Pakistan produces a lot of basmati rice. But they cannot sell it as basmati as India has the GI. So, they in turn sell it to Indian traders in Dubai, who sell it branding it as basmati. There is an ongoing litigation though, but unlikely anything will happen.

BTW, Onions have indeed become very costly, at least here in Pune. It's typical cold storage hoarding tactics basically.
Pawar Saheb back at his old tricks.

Who made you a think tank ? You are being smug for growing onions now ? What's next ? match sticks ?
lmao

PUNE: With prices touching the half-century mark in wholesale markets on Monday, traders are busy signing contracts to import onions from Pakistan and Egypt, which have been coming to Delhi for the past eight days. With no effective government action and deficient rains in Maharashtra and Karnataka, onion prices increased about 20% in the Lasalgaon market on Monday, as it opened after a three-day holiday.
