I agree with your analysis. Differing, unique and unpopular views are the gems of the forum. They may represent the views of a minority or a fringe group but they bring with them much needed critical thinking and objective resolution of problems. Joe has as much defended India as others so I don't get the hatred towards him from Indians themselves.
The problem is that controversial or even disparate views are often treated with suspicion and at times outright hatred. No one sees these figures claims as a method to improve oneself. There needs to be a change of approach, the Arundhati Roys and Nadeem F Paracha's if we do not agree with them at least we can respect the unique thought they bring to society.
I am very aggressively involved myself in speaking for the rights of my people both pashtuns and lucknowis but that does not mean I hate anyone. Same is true for Joe. Cut him some slack people. His views are welcome anywhere. He is a wise sagacious old dude who has seen and witnessed more than a lot of us combined.
Arundhati Roy is a bitch.
A hot one though.
