Why China Is Weak on Soft Power

Sunni Muslims killing Shiite Muslims, and vice versa. Not our fight. Boys will be boys, I guess. You guys better line up more oil from South America.

Yet it all started with the Invasion it seemed Saddam was likely better kept in charge oh well, with Iraq getting closer to Iran it seems the biggest winner of this was is Iran. we got Oil contracts from Iraq

As an American, the only real complaint I have with the PRC government is that it does not trust its own people to have basic freedoms, and that it does not help create human rights and stability in the world in general. I have no doubt that the Chinese people will develop a government that is worthy of its people within another two generations, if not sooner.

Different country make different trade offs on different freedom based on it is economic and social situation. No developing country ever has real freedom regardless of whether it is democracy or totalitarian. China is like US in 1920 with a lot o chaos and unjustice. I am sure it will get better when it is more developed.

As to help create human rights and stability in the world, are you referring to current US government? You just have no idea of how much soft power US has lost since Clinton years until you step outside of the US boundary. In early 1990s, most Chinese look up to US as the beacon of freedom and prosperity. And now US is considreed as a big bad bully by most Chinese. I am surprised that you still believe this human rights bullxxxx and call yourself "TruthSeeker". CNN/Fox is as brainwashing as CCTV, the difference, is that no one believes CCTV.

US will have much stronger soft power if my tax money is spent on building US itself instead of bombing and killing innocent lives in the name of "helping creating human rights".

If you need an example of the CCP's persecution of Chinese artists, look no further than the story of Chinese actress Tang Wei, who is banned from working in China for her lead role in the critically acclaimed movie Lust, Caution. Tang Wei since left China to seek work in other countries and Chinese authorities followed her to Taiwan to pressure Taiwanese industry to not give her work.

So what's her "crime" so grave that she's permanently banned from Chinese film industry? She played the role of a spy who fell in love with a Pro-Japan figure whom she was supposed to target in the 1930s. So if Tang Wei can be permanently banned from Chinese movie industry for a frivolous reason like this, imagine the kind of threats and pressures against other Chinese actors and movie makers. Now how are Chinese content creators supposed to prosper and create competitive content in a toxic environment like this?

And Tang Wei saga isn't the end of it; the Chinese government also banned a bunch of talent contest shows like Super Girl, because the show picked its winning contestants by viewer votes by phone and that deemed too much like a democratic election, a big no no in totalitarian China.

"Lust, Caution" actress banned in China

HONG KONG (Hollywood Reporter) - "Lust, Caution" star Tang Wei has been banned in the Chinese media because of the sexual nature of her performance in director Ang Lee's steamy drama, according to local press reports.

An internal memo from China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) was reportedly sent to all television stations and print media in China on Thursday night, stating that a new television commercial starring Tang for skin care brand Pond's was to cease broadcast immediately. All print ads and feature content using the actress also were to be pulled. The memo gave no reason for the ban.

..

The banning of a film, along with its cast and crew, months after release is not uncommon in China. In early January, SARFT banned the producers of the film "Lost in Beijing" for two years and ordered the film's theatrical and home video release to be recalled. The "Lost" cinematic release had been delayed because of sexual content, which was ultimately cut from both the theatrical and home video editions.

China Decides to Ban Time Travel

In China… well, in China, many weird things happen. The Chinese government, in another strange episode, has decided to ban time travel. Well, at least when it comes to television shows and movies.

With the way things are run, the state controls and monitors everything shown on your television or your computer. So yeah, China can randomly go back in time and say Marty McFly never existed. Scary, huh? Fortunately, that’s not what they’re saying.

Somehow, though, the government has taken a sudden disliking to the idea of distorting certain historical events, things and people. (Cough.)

The idea of time-travel has soared in popularity recently, and it seems like the authorities have just gotten sick of it. Common themes revolve around protagonists going back to ancient times, with script writers often taking liberties with plots and events. Even worse than just being an annoyance, some people fear a real disrespect for China’s history.

The decision was made earlier this month, with the country’s State Administration for Radio, Film & Television stating that “The producers and writers are treating the serious history in a frivolous way, which should by no means be encouraged anymore.”

What’s wrong with these shows? They “casually make up myths, have monstrous and weird plots, use absurd tactics, and even promote feudalism, superstition, fatalism and reincarnation.”

Sunni Muslims killing Shiite Muslims, and vice versa. Not our fight. Boys will be boys, I guess. You guys better line up more oil from South America.

And now you realize that this is not our fight. When Bush started the Iraq war he didn't even realize there existed two sects. Iraq war is one of the most stupid wars US has ever fought in each and every way. Could the US government stop lecturing on others on human rights and focus on 99% of the people here?

I am just amazed on how people can link anything to "democratic election", and what's even more amazing is there are actual retards buying into this.

if you put maps like this how the fcuk will your soft power work..?

Well a Chinese soft power would try to convince its Southeast Asian neighbors by bombarding the region with TV dramas and movies showing historical Chinese heroes being active in the Spratlys Islands. This would help to convince Vietnamese and Filifino citizens that Spratlys were historically Chinese.

Fortunately, Chinese soft power is weak and no one watches Chinese content outside of China.

China’s ‘Super Girl’ talent show canceled for being too democratic?
By Sarah Anne Hughes

“Super Girl,” which premiere in 2004, allowed viewers to vote for their favorite singer through text messages and phone polls. Kathrin Hill of the Financial Times reports that this “Western-style” of voting was seen as “subversive” by some officials.

Talent shows in China: No voting please, we

No voting please, we’re Chinese
The government shuts down a TV show in which viewers vote for the winner

“Happy Girl” trimmed its sails by restricting voting mainly to a studio audience. But there were other issues that must have annoyed the party as well: the massive audiences drawn by talent shows, compared with the staid programming of the official China Central Television; the unconventional appearance of some of the contestants (this year’s “Happy Girl” winner looked rather boyish); and the participants’ unscripted emotional outbursts.

Super Girl : Banned for letting hundreds of millions of fans vote via text message for the winner.
Happy Girl : Still banned because it allowed the studio audiences to vote for the winner.

In other word, have voting of any kind in the show and you are banned.

Great, when I call you ilogical, you just pull more silly articles and believe that enough nonsense makes sense automatically. Please, ask some Chinese to know why Super/Happy girl has trouble and many other "voting based" contest are OK. You probably don't know tonight's New Year Gala is also voting based for best programs. Next time try concluding this is "Both programs are banned because Chinese has gender injustice and this shows a clear discrimination against girls". It is still stupid but at least it makes more logical sense.

Please don't tell me you are one of these naive people who believes the voting in these reality shows has any relevance!

The eliminations are carefully calculated by the producers to maximize ratings. The 'voting' is just a gimmick to raise extra money.

Look, on a serious note, China is a great nation with a very intelligent and hard-working people. The world will benefit tremendously from Chinese soft power, if it arrives in a benevolent fashion. As an American, the only real complaint I have with the PRC government is that it does not trust its own people to have basic freedoms, and that it does not help create human rights and stability in the world in general. "Chinese Communist Party has 80 million members, and 300 million people belong to families in which someone has Party membership: “The Party is no longer just a political party or a class,” “When the party organization reaches a certain size, it becomes the people itself, and people form the system.” Han Han Blogger with World's largest viewership.
