Why A $20-Billion Defence Deal May Be Scrapped

yep scrap it and buy SU-35 and S-400 and put the rest into infrastructure, enough is enough now

You guys are so mean to my fellow Pakistanis :P

I think India would've paid the $20 billion, but they want to make them to drive the Indian economy and do the stuff china did with Russia (making copies/reverse engineering). If India can't do that, then $20 billion IS expensive for this amount of jets. Hell, even Pakistan would've bought these jets if they could get equal deal to what India wanted, except we'd pay I guess $10 billion since our overall GDP is 33 in a year alone and Indian defense budget is some 40 billion. The point I'm making, $20 + technology sharing/making is a BIG bonus.

Chup ho ja Chore... Sab pol kholega key.

Yeah you're right we can't afford 110 million fighter Rafale but we can afford 150 million FGFA :cool::cool: Thats How poor we are :confused:

You mean this one

New Delhi: Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India this week, the two countries will hold talks on Tuesday to iron out differences on the much delayed joint multi-billion dollar Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) project.
Defence sources said the talks between Indian and Russian officials here are being held as both the countries are keen to go ahead with the FGFA. Putin is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi the next day.

However, there are issues on which both sides have not arrived at a consensus.

The sources said that it is "unlikely" that the contract would be signed during Putin's visit.[quote/]:close_tema::cray:

You are compring the total aquisition cost of Rafale to the flyaway cost of F-35.

If you add the cost of setting up an F-35 assembly line, and transfer of technology, and training, it will be a lot more expensive than Rafale.

How much more?

Other than parts or some local assembly - I doubt US will part with much tot on F35 which needs to be factored in as well.

That's right. And that is why comparing the flyaway cost of F-35 and the aquisition cost of Rafale including ToT and assembly line is pointless.

Hypothetically if we were to setup a manufacturing unit for F-35, and also purchase ToT, the per unit cost of F-35 would be a lot more than the presently touted flyaway cost.

And if we just purchased the Rafales rolling out from the already set up French assembly line, it wouldn't cost so much.

True.

India still needs to replace its MiG-21s. Su-30 is not a MiG-21 replacement. If India is all set for Russian products again, why not select MiG-29 to replace MiG-21s? Just a thought.

France will not transfer technology of key components. India must not be too excited about the transfer of technology. Assembly of aircraft and transfer of technology are different things.

On a serious side of argument. India took almost 10 years to decide which aircraft to buy. Then it shortlisted one and has been negotiating for 3 years!

Now they are thinking of going back to the aircraft which they already had 13 years ago! This is height of incompetency.

I don't know why, but most such tenders are long delayed and complicated not just in the case of India - Brazil took a lot more years than us to finalise and then suddenly went with grippen rejecting both the Rafale and F18 which were touted to win.

Same is the case with many who have now shifted to F35 after long delays and are awaiting their shipments....For E. G. Japan.

If what the article says is true than the obvious replacement for mig21 is LCA.

Yeah that just says you wanted more but didn't wanna pay for it.
We are Paying them Enough.MOD Concern is Even with Paying them 20 billion they are Not taking guarantee of the HAL built 108 Rafales which Mandatory to RFP issued.Well they will Give-in in End to Save Sellers Reputation in Rafales

PS:20 billion figure is just Media Exaggeration Even with 110 Per Piece fighter tag Rafale cost around 13.8 billion add 4-5 billion for Kits & Package Max
