Whistleblower Army sahayak found dead

RIP, sad incident.

Tej bahadur does not born in Pakistan, only in a democratic country where you can question Army. Think about someone questioning Pakistan army in Pakistan!! It is like a failed missile test by Pakistan, impossible.
Try another drivel....typical delusional Indian, can't comprehend between a soldier questioning his own establishment....It's not exactly a Dalit telling a Brahmin to stay away from his well.....in any case, if you creatures had so much democratic values, you wouldn't be crawling on this forum rather everyone else would be keen to join your small world.

They are saying that he committed suicide but I think he was killed by Indian Army the matter should be investigated.
They will show it as a suicide no matter what happen . remember the colonel who was involved in samjhota express blast .

I have nothing to add just pity the poor soul and the corruption that this event shows in Indian society.

He was recruited as a soldier not a servant of officer.

This is not something unique for Indian army, Pakistan army too has the same system. The sahayak system was inherited from British. Though I feel, it has no place in today's society.

Pakistan Army is a great institution no doubt. But its leadership must take steps to remove the Raj era traditions it still holds on to. The orderly system is what personally I dont like. I have seen orderlies being abused by housewives of the officers. They consider them their personal servants.

Another one is the idea of cantonments and 'officer mess'. Since the economic development of the country has not been a priority of successive governments and hence the social and economic development of the nation as a whole has been patchy and non uniform, privileged 'ghettos' have cropped up over whole of the country. All of a sudden a system that suited the colonial masters has become an acceptable norm in a supposedly 'free' nation.

Here in Canada, there is no special privilege class. So you will see navy and army officers in uniform traveling in subway train lugging their big bags themselves not their orderlies. Pakistan unfortunately is not an equitable and true society, its shallow and pretentious. That is why holding on to colonial traditions is a notion of pride for some as it gives them a distinct and privileged outlook.

Dear Pakistan army has already abolished Batman system 10 years back. No soldier is used for private work like it's done in India Army. Plz do some research before posting

A soldier, Roy Mathew, who was part of an expose on "sahayak" system in the army was found hanging

MUMBAI:
HIGHLIGHTS
  1. Soldier was missing since Saturday, government says sting behind suicide
  2. Had spoken to website about army's orderly system, apologised to senior
  3. Video showed junior soldiers doing chores for household officers

A 33-year-old soldier who was part of a recent expose by a website on the abuse of the British-era "sahayak" or orderly system in the army was found hanging in abandoned barracks on Thursday. Roy Mathew was missing from the artillery centre in the cantonment in Deolali in Maharashtra since last Saturday, after the video of the sting went viral. His body was found in a decomposed state.

The Defence Ministry called the death a suicide and said initial investigations revealed it "may be a result of the series of events which were triggered by media personnel managing to videograph the deceased by asking leading questions on his duties as a buddy without his knowledge".

It was "very likely", said the ministry, that the "guilt factor of letting down his superiors or conveying false impression" pushed him over the edge.

The soldier's diary appears to indicate this, according to the police. "We have a recovered a diary and a letter...he was feeling bad about taking names of seniors and has said sorry to some of them," said Srikant Dhivare, a senior police officer.

The police have, however, registered a case of "accidental death" for now, asserting that only forensic tests can confirm how he died.

The army denies that Roy Mathew was questioned and under pressure after the video, which showed soldiers attached to senior officers for sahayak or "buddy duties" walking their dogs or taking their children to school. It said the soldier's face was masked, so he could not be identified.

But sources say that he did send a one-word SMS to an officer saying "sorry" last Saturday.

The soldier's brother Jijo Jose revealed that he had called his family in Kerala last Friday, a day before he went AWOL. "After that, his phone was switched off. He didn't indicate he was tense. We tried calling him...The suicide is very shocking," he said.

The video has been removed from the website.

It was reportedly the soldier who contacted the site after the video of another jawan, Lance Naik Yagya Pratap Singh, became viral in January. Lance Naik Singh had alleged that he was forced to wash clothes, polish boots and walk dogs for his seniors.

NEW DELHI: An Army jawan who had figured in a sting operation by a news website criticising the 'sahayak' (orderly) system last month was found dead in mysterious conditions in an abandoned barrack in Deolali Cantonment in Maharashtra on Thursday. Roy Mathew, a gunner, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room. Doctors said 33-year-old Mathew, whose body was decomposed, might have died three days ago.

Police sources said Mathew, who had served the Army for around 13 years, was among several jawans in Deolali seen in the video which featured soldiers walking dogs of officers and taking their children to school. The sting operation had sparked an uproar against the British-era sahayak system.

Mathew, who had been missing from his artillery unit since February 25, was facing an inquiry after the sting operation was posted online, sources said.

It is being probed if Mathew, who was attached for 'buddy duties' with a Colonel rank officer posted as an additional officer at the Artillery Centre in Deolali, had felt tortured or harassed after appearing in the video," said a police source, adding that after the video was widely circulated on various social media platforms, Mathew was questioned by several officials.

The source said Mathew had run away from the unit on February 25 and had remained missing since. "He had come under huge pressure," the source added. On being contacted, the Army, however, said Mathew had gone "AWOL (absent without official leave)" within 24 hours of the video being aired on February 24.

Poor soul. Imho someone wants to send a strong message to those who dare to criticise the Indian armed forces.

What soldiers? Soldiers are not treated like dogs and fed like animals. They are slaves of Indian Army officers. Even cows get more respect than these poor souls. Don't know what's keeping them from revolting against the officers and turning their guns against them?
