Tipu sultan was NOT the ruler of the Mysore Kingdom.

He was a glorified general and usurper who had kept the Hindu king under house arrest like his father, and had him brought out and paraded in public during special occasions.

"sultan" was not his title, it was part of his Name.

Its a common misconception to think he was a king.

Also the local rulers DID band together , but it was to DEFEAT Tipu sultan and his bigotry.
