When it comes to British rule, rich, powerful Indians were complicit every step of the way

In ‘Peace, Poverty and Betrayal’, Roderick Matthews writes that the initial strategy of the British in India was ‘oblige and rule’.

The Anglo-Indian connection was instrumental in creating the first stable liberal democracies in both Europe and Asia. This was not a coincidence; there were evident historical processes at work. The enmeshed quality of the Anglo-Indian relationship goes right back to its earliest days. Within the disorderly pile of ideas that constituted imperialism, there was always scope for a wide range of governing attitudes to flourish, some of which were inherently contradictory. The aspiration towards fitting Indians for self-government was the most obvious; educating Indians in British law and political theory was another.

There was collusion on many levels from the very start of British rule in India, and the construction of the later imperial system would not have been possible without the collaboration of Indians, many of whose descendants are still enjoying the privileges they earned.

The British took virtually no land for themselves and, on the whole, did not settle. Even as late as the 1860s, a powerful argument against the sale of ‘waste’ lands in India was that the availability of cheap land might encourage Europeans to migrate in force and assemble estates.

The major change in landownership brought about by British rule was from small peasants to larger landowners. This provides an important clue as to why the British succeeded politically for so long.

When the British arrived, India had an exploitative hierarchical social system, the centrepiece of which was the rural economy. By their own published standards, the British did too little to change this, and eventually ended up supporting it. They tried to redesign the legal framework of landholding, but not the social structures that surrounded it. This made it easier to run the country without making enemies. The finger that pulled the trigger was Indian... For one the other was an alien as much as the Brits themselves. The social structure that French and Brits obliged exists to this day!
It need not be conquered, they are and shall remain so... it has been ingrained in their existence, a marker in the DNA perhaps...
To be an Indian is to accept your fate... is to accept Karma and suffering as part of dharma. For these chains are not on hands or feet, they shackle minds!!!
Brits gave land, just like their predecessors Moguls in winning allies. Hindu rulers had all but one aim... maintain their possessions, lifestyles and patronage or dominion over the minds... that persisted through generations. Afterall, what better parting gift they could offer their posterity.
The architecture of power in ruling the minds... ones without, toil and feed you for the rest of your years. Not too different from capitalism which sucks the blood of it's disciples in hopes of gaining the same wealth as those in their upper strata ... success they call it ... so, aim for it cause some just happened to be born with it...

Either way... it is good that curiosity has opened other gateways to look back and reflect. About time!

Problem was/is that India was/is a collection of states, ethnicities, castes which was/is very easy to divide. There was no single entity called "India" that existed as a nation then with any sense of nationhood or a common national identity which could have prevented or at least blunted the impact of divide & rule strategy.

Unfortunately Pakistan inherited most of these nawabs. These very haramis murdered both quid and Liaqat Ali Khan and divided the Pakistani nation on ethnic lines. Even Shah Mehmood quereshy is son of a guy who helped goras, if I remember correctly. India on the other hand was fortunate to have Serdar W B Patel, who cleaned this filth to a considerable extent.

not much changed actually, only royalty was disposed of, they were pretty toothless after they lost their kingdoms. hereditary can't maintain their acumen beyond 3 to 4 generations. Business houses who had the wealth networks were the real people running the kingdoms. Now, they are running big corporate houses, they fund news channels and political parties. They are still running the show by funding political parties. They use media to control the narrative and decide what common people should think, They use it to manipulate people, whenever they become assertive about their rights. Only thing keep them back to some extend is Constitution and voting rights. Without which its game over.

The French were the first to realize the opportunities this presented, and in the 1740s they based their bid for power in the Carnatic on notional grants of land revenue. But they failed to capitalize. The British learned, and did. The French, largely through circumstance, attempted to turn Hyderabad into a client state, which turned out to be a poor choice. The British, largely through circumstance, chose Bengal, which proved to be a lucrative, sustainable and defensible choice.

Imperial Realities

To structure a new understanding, we must accept that, after British rule in Bengal was established in 1757, the Anglo-Indian relationship was never a conflict between two well-defined sides. Complex and flexible alliances always existed between alien and indigenous forces, as sectional interests sought advantages within the wider context. Conventional histories tend to underplay this fluidity, and overlook the degree to which elite groups in Britain and India were subdivided throughout their encounter, while sections within them were often in collaboration.

British attitudes towards India were never fixed. There was a long series of domestic disagreements about what to do in India. These sometimes fell along party political lines, which is why it is important to look more closely at events in Britain than is usually the case in histories of India. It is also necessary to look closely at the men who built, justified and ran British India. What they believed, the resistance they faced and the assistance they received are the very stuff of the story.

Reducing the story to one strand—the Indian struggle for freedom—makes for a stirring tale, with a high level of emotional payoff for South Asian audiences, but it artificially restricts the narrative. Nor can the story of British rule in India be reduced to a clash of imperialism versus nationalism. Both of these ideas are historically problematic, and events were more often shaped by opportunism, misjudgements and mistaken assumptions, especially on the British side. The most significant example is the reversal of British policy after the revolt of 1857. Before then, the British were allied with India’s modernizers; afterwards they supported the most conservative sections of Indian society. Before 1857 the British were effectively working against the traditional grain of Indian society; afterwards they were working with it. This was the great betrayal.

What ultimately dominated the course of the Anglo-Indian encounter was the development of two parallel political projects: the British search for legitimacy and the Indian quest for unity. Both had a degree of high-mindedness about them, but both were ultimately driven by a strong sense of utility: the British were looking for security as cheaply as possible, and the Indians needed to find collective strength to expel the invaders.

But both projects ultimately failed. The penalty for the British was expulsion; for the Indians it was Partition. After 1757, it was the Indians who got the worse deal all through.

It's an enjoyable read, that touches upon history with an honest and open mind. But spoilt by the ending with the claim that India lost because of the partition. This completely destroys the open honest review of history.

This partition saga is nothing more then a fantasy spun to create a false narrative. South Asia like Europe is a patch work of different ethnicities with strong individual identities, when the British arrived there were dozens of kingdoms, when they left, there were just two nation states. How is that a loss?

There are nearly 200 countries in the world, dozens in Europe, borders do not bother them, the Arab league has 22 members with the same ethnicity, language and religion, they don't cry about borders, and yet, there is this childish story created about partition in South Asia, as if to say it was the biggest crime in history, its an imbecilic and moronic way of thinking.
It is this narrative and this thinking that is the sole cause of continuous hate and disharmony in South Asia.

As soon as we start to accept the true nature our history, we will have peace, and there is a desperate need to be truthful, the narrative of partition is a childish lie.

British leaving only resulted in partial freedom, they handed over power to Brahmans and upper castes, who were assisting British in occupation. 800 million Native people of India OBC SC ST are still under occupation. Almost, nil representation in judiciary, media and bureaucracy. All the centers of power are held by minions of British.

Britishers should be happy we still have the descendants of the same elites who collaborated with the British colonizer still alive and kicking, thriving and still collaborating with the Western colonial powers in the shape of the Pakistan Army led by the moral inheritor of Mir Jaffer, i.e. Mir Bajwa...

Not all is lost for the British colonial enterprise.

That was not the question. Did anything good come out of the rulers that preceded the British ?
 
This is still happening today. The right and powerful of India Pakistani sri lankan orgin are used by the west to subjugate the masses. Just look at the lotas of Pakistan. They serve America.
