What's new

When it comes to British rule, rich, powerful Indians were complicit every step of the way

That was not the question. Did anything good come out of the rulers that preceded the British ?
Yes, lots of good has come after independence from British. Education levels increased, Industrialization, better food security, stable borders - less wars - overall economic stability and better growth, Infrastructure has improved roads go to remote villages, electrification of remote areas, less corruption etc etc.
Democracy and right to vote is the best thing, elections should be held every 3 years instead of 5. And there should be right to recall, so people can call a vote to pull down a elected government, if it goes back on its election promises.

Let me make the English easier. Did anything good come out of the leaders (Kings/Maharajas/Sultans) who ruled before the British came ?

90 million people in the subcontinent died from famines during British rule

British could not kill Indian via diseases like smallpox in large numbers, so they chose starvation similar to potato famine in Ireland

No mass famines and second largest economy in the world

It is questionable if India was 2nd largest economy after1500. India was not a united entity anyway in 1500. If India had the 2nd largest economy in 1500 it was because India has 2nd largest number of people in the world. It had nothing to do with the ruling class. Europe had 60 million compared to 100 million in India in 1500. I would argue Europeans were outperforming Indians easily by 1500. This is before any colonial exploitation of India. There are 3 million Native Americans living in the landmass called USA&Canada in 1500.

Famines existed in the times before the British came. Nothing was documented well enough. The British took the time to document the fact it happened. It is more frequent because the population went up without corresponding increases in food production. Look at the widespread malnutrition that continues to this day. There is no denying the fact that British indifference to the masses played a big role here. You are assuming Indian Rajas were any more benevolent.

There were pros and cons for both British rule and previous Rulers.

Even Europe developed and industrialized under kings, because its society underwent revolution, Renaissance,

From perspective of majority 800 million OBC SC ST, it was only due to developments in last few decades of British rule that caste system lost its severity. British supported many social reformers from OBC SC ST. Also, the British missionaries setting up schools helped.
For example the Simon Commission

Something went positive for us in 1000+ years.

A fourteen-year old girl from one of Jotirao’s schools for untouchables wrote an essay in which she said, “The Brahmins say that other castes should not read the Vedas; this leaves us without a scripture. Thus, are we without religion? Oh God, please tell us, what is our religion? God, by Your Grace, you sent us the kindly British government. This has brought relief and welfare. Before the British came the Mahars and Mangs were beheaded when they committed an offence against the people of higher castes. Earlier we were not allowed to move about freely in the bazaar of Sultekadi; now we can.” Such was the freedom given to girls in schools run by Jotiba.

Every European country made progress when the king was put under constitutional monarchy/parliament. In England it started in 1215 with the Magna Carta. Without such any progress I do not think Indian rulers did squat for the Indian people.

This is depressing to see. The village elders should be publicly shamed and should be given a strict punishment to make an example out of. At least, the police took some action:
"Meanwhile, the police invoked provisions of Protection of Civil Rights Act against former Gram Panchayat member Narayanaswamy, Venkateshappa, the husband of the Gram Pradhan, panchayat vice-president and a few others."

Casteist people are just insecure beings who have nothing going for them, just the so-called superior caste they belong to.
