if we get a secular pakistan where religion and politics are not mixed, what might it look like?
how will it benefit pakistan?
how will it be bad for pakistan?
if we get a secular pakistan in 5 years, what can it achieve in a decade? what will it lose?
list the pros and the cons!

when i say secular, I'm strictly talking about separation of masjid and state!
by becoming secular we don't become atheists!

i request indians to not vote in this poll
If secularism means separation of religion from the functioning of the state,it is highly unlikely in Pakistan bcoz of its history.Even India isn't a secular country by that definition. Every govt program starts by seeing an auspicious day according to Hindu calendar.Even launching of satellites are fixed according to muhurtam.no central or state function starts without breaking coconut. All the govt buildings are built according to vaasthu. But the only thing which makes India secular is Hindus don't give much importance to religious leaders.hence there isn't any influence of religious bigots on govt like pak.Another factor is as Hinduism is a polytheistic religion we treat all the religions equal.

Islam also treats others religions with respect... It says "Let there be no complusion in religion" ... and nor we as a nation or fundamentalists... but yes fundamentalism polluted with other concoctions it has become one... but the truth is tht a majority nation with ( sorry to say 3+ % ) can't be a totally secular nation like the West...

If Islam is the one thing holding Pakistan together then what is holding India together?

.
Can we for once stop talking about whats right in theory and focus on what's actually working in the world?
  1. There is no country in the world at the moment which is 100% compliant with shariat. So that model has clearly no working examples, except from the time of Prophet (PBUH).
  2. Countries with mixed models (like Pakistan) have always been struggling.
  3. On the other hand, look at the west and their progress in recent past.
Its makes sense to replicate something that is working elsewhere and try to improve/adapt it to local conditions. The way things are moving (chaos all around), Muslim world will eventually settle on the model set by West. I don't know when this will happen or how, but I think it inevitable.

Indians(read Hindus) by nature are passive.they are happy if their lives function smoothly.no one is bothered whether his neighbour is vaishnavite or shaivite or any atheist.no pandit has any authority to pass any fatwa. This is the reason India is united

I think it's due to the fact that India always was a natural entity, maybe it was only united a few times but the culture from Manipur to Tamil Nadu was always roughly the same.

@qamar1990 thanks for inviting me to this thread but I seriously have no time to go through 14 pages....

Lets start with its definition:

sec·u·lar

  1. 1.
denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis.
    "secular buildings"
synonyms:nonreligious, areligious, lay, temporal, worldly, earthly, profane; More

  2. 2.
    CHRISTIAN CHURCH
(of clergy) not subject to or bound by religious rule; not belonging to or living in a monastic or other order.

A secular state is a concept of secularism, whereby a state or country purports to be officially neutral in matters of religion, supporting neither religion nor irreligion

A secular state also claims to treat all its citizens equally regardless of religion, and claims to avoid preferential treatment for a citizen from a particular religion/nonreligion over other religions/nonreligion. Secular states do not have a state religion (established religion) or equivalent, although the absence of a state religion does not necessarily mean that a state is fully secular; however, a true secular state should steadfastly maintain national governance without influence from religious factions;

Treating all the citizens equally is basically democracy or at least should be the pillar of democracy...which mind you exists in no state on the planet...there are minorities and some form of injustice in every damn country on the planet...the scale varies...

Not all legally secular states are completely secular in practice.

  • In France for example, many Christian holy days are official holidays for the public administration, and teachers in Catholic schools are salaried by the state. In some European states where secularism confronts monoculturalist philanthropy some of the main Christian sects and sects of other religions depend on the state for some of the financial resources for their religious charities. It is common in Corporate law and Charity law to prohibit them from using those funds to organize religious worship in a separate place of worship or for conversion; the religious body itself must provide the religious content, educated clergy and lay-persons to exercise its own functions and may choose to afford part of their time to the separate charities. To that effect some of those charities establish secular organizations that manage part of or all of the donations from the main religion(s).
Many states that nowadays are secular in practice may have legal vestiges of an earlier established religion. Secularism also has various guises which may coincide with some degree of official religiosity. In the United Kingdom, the head of state is still required to take the 1688-enacted Coronation Oath swearing to maintain the Protestant Reformed religion in the United Kingdom and preserve the established Church of England. The United Kingdom also maintains positions in the House of Lords for 26 senior clergymen of the Church of England known as the Lords Spiritual.

The reverse progression can also occur, a state can go from being secular to a religious state as in the case of Iran where the secularized state of the Pahlavi dynasty was replaced by the Islamic Republic . Over the last 250 years, there has been a trend towards secularism.

Now Secular state...Is it even a possibility or a myth...As wiki clearly points out htat the secular states also have practices or even legal vestiges from earlier established religion....mostly Christianity...Hence the separation of the state from the religion never actually happened especially when you have remnants of previous religion still mixing state matters...from donations to certain laws ...

In the United Kingdom there are officially two state recognised Christian denominations – the Church of England and the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The Queen is both head of state and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. There is no established church in Northern Ireland or Wales but the 26 unelected bishops of the Church of England who sit in the House of Lords influence laws that affect the whole of the UK.
And a simple google would show you various results about USA also...

My personal opinion:

Many dont understand the meaning of secular...many actually think its a ticket to transgress (I swear that is what most think)

Others think it is a ticket to become Westernized

And another group just goes outright Haram

So lets see...A secular Pakistan will bring clashes in all the above stated groups...we will have lawyers and court cases over and over coz no one can question the people what they are doing coz everyone is running on what they consider ethically right (since religion no longer governs what is right and wrong...state, law everything)

Well, the second part of secularism is equal rights for everyone (every religion) this is already instructed by in Islam...

What should be done is keep politics away from Religiously fiddling with people's mind....how? By purchasing a Mullah and giving weird to nonesense fatwahs....However I do believe that state should intervene how? it should monitor the Mullahs...if that means we dont get the secular title! So be it!

IF it is going to cause chaos in our region then sorry I dont want secularism but I do want rights for every group and that doesnt require one to be secualr!

Yeah,I forgot this important factor.even though India was politically united only a few times everyone here always had the feeling that they belonged to one big entity called bharata varsha.what is incredible about India is unlike China,Iran or Saudi which all have more or less same language and culture,India has many languages, cultures, religions, customs and traditions. No matter what happens, you never come across a Hindu who says he wants his region to be divided from India.
I sometimes feel pak punjabis might have lived more peacefully with Indians than they are living with pashtuns or balochs .

.
As you can see the results there are about 15 Indians who want Pakistan to be Secular...

While 4 Indians saying no ...

I dont know about Pakistani but Indians seem more hyped about the topic at hand! Just coz they hugged a new religion (yes to be secular you have certain rules just like religion has certain rules that you should abide to and you should refrain from) the opposite side of the spectrum (opposite to the mullah) does the same...forces down secularism (their religion/ belief)

.
Islamic Pakistan broke down into two. Islamic Pakistan has minorities blown up. Islamic Pakistan has shia pilgrims being blown up. Islamic Pakistan has Taliban. Islamic Pakistan has a barbaric *** backwards Blasphemy law. Islamic Pakistan has Ahmedi's killed in their own homes. Islamic Pakistan kills the voice of reason.

Need i say more maulvi sab?

Yawn.....

So, what's new? Its not as though GOP goes around doing all that stuff. What would secularism do? Stop all this?

.
Don't think of past, think of the future which lies ahead. My suggestion,if a Secular mulk benefits the majority of Pakistanis then go for it,otherwise chapter closed. U can try for some other things. It reminds me the Chinese Proverb "A cat can be black, brown or white,it doesn't matter as long it catches mice."

Lastly Please don't try to bring India in your reply. Why are u going back to 1947

because history has put us together , what benefit us only Allah knows.. we humans have no knowledge of right or wrong ..

In Pakistan, Islamists don't spread freedom, they are spreading anarchy.

when i say Over religious free peoples i mean taliban and madarsa type , who have nothing to do with islam

Don't you think this is happening right now? Blasphemy laws are being misused. A Governor was killed and his killer is treated as a hero. Mullahs imposing their own shariat in their areas (Swat). Mullahs kidnapping people because they think they can (Lal Masjid).

A secular state will not tolerate this BS. People can't hide behind their religion after committing crimes.

Remember, lots of Islamic laws are open to interpretation. Secularism based laws are not.
