What is your opinion regarding a Petrol/Diesel Car of the same category?

Petrol!
With the price differential so low and taking into account the higher initial price and maintenance, you'd have to use a diesel car as much as a taxi to get any real benefit from a diesel car.

Nice car. Auto? That is the better gearbox for an oilburner.
Yeah it an auto trans. i love traveling in it but most of the time i go in my safari , its better as it has a high ground clearance and i due to my work travel a lot into rural areas.

Good combination of vehicles, no doubt.

Now that the difference between Petrol and Diesel price have come down to Rs.5.30 per litre, I would like to seek your opinion point wise regarding buying a new Car(though I am not considering buying one now, just opinions). Petrol or Diesel of the same type of Car, i.e buying a Petrol Dzire or Diesel Dzire??

I always feel important when someone tags me for my opinion!! :D

In comparison to diesel cars, Petrol cars are cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, zippier for stop & go (generally), and you can add CNG or LPG options, both are cheaper than petrol or diesel, CNG is the cheapest though.

But diesel cars are still cheaper to run compared to petrol, its not only the price difference, but diesel also gives better mileage, but that will give you real savings only if your usage is high. Diesel is better for off-roading also.

Lol
I know I am so very dilettante on this topic but still giving my opinion like I did almost an year back when you were planning to buy a car for your dad. :)
In my opinion there can not be one right answer when someone asks to compare the petrol and diesel engines.
I have mostly heard of this comparison from my dad and father in law both of whom use diesel and petrol engines.
My dad uses a skoda octavia (diesel) and sx4 (petrol). And dad always uses the diesel car for long journeys (Goa to Kerala mostly). He prefers it because diesel engines are much quiter and fuel efficient albeit the initial cost is high.
When I drove the petrol car SX4 then I found it much smoother than the ford figo(diesel) and scorpio (diesel) that I had driven in India. I am not comparing the vehicles in India with my car in UAE because I am not sure if the Camry is smoother to drive because its an automatic car or because its a petrol car orrrr if its because a toyota engine?
I have no idea about Dzire.I saw the car in India and was impressed by how it looked.Thats all I know about Dzire. :)
I havent read the other posts on this thread but I hope you've got some good advices from the automobile experts here.

While petrol cars are usually cheaper than diesel, the diesel cars offers better fuel economy and therefore bring down the running cost but diesel car have high maintenance cost. The spare parts of diesel cars are slightly expensive than the petrol ones. But still present day petrol cars are using turbo-charging technology. This significant development has helped not just in churning more power but also in improving fuel efficiency.

But let's take this apart for the subsidy on diesel fuel is soon going to be fully revoked by the government - they are increasing the diesel price by 50 paise every month and as of now the central's government subsidy on diesel is somewhere between Rs.4-5 - in a couple of years it would all be revoked and the difference between the prices of petrol and deisel would be more or less same.

Diesel engines are preferred for longer journeys on the thoroughfares that result in better mileage and since they have plenty of torque, they don’t need revving up regularly. They are mostly favoured by professionals and office goers whereas Petrol engines are the choice of masses due to their quick response and power delivery.

So ultimately it depends on your use - if you will be using it for long journeys and your care usage is high then go for diesel or else petrol variant is sufficient
