I agree. As i said, this was a practice in the past, not necessarily it is followed now. You may know.. GSBs around mangalore side run temples & act as priests as well. There are strictly GSB run & managed temples in places like Mulki, Karkala etc. You may find more similarities between Brahmins & GSBs around there.

well.. if you go by the books, then there is quite a few differences between Konkani & bunts. While bunts are predominantly non-vegetarians, konkanis are vegitarians. While bunts are mostly agriculturists, konkanis are traders. While bunts speak tulu, konkanis speak in konkani.. & also there is no marriage between the communities. Now.. this was the practice in the past. But there is no hard & fast rule in this day & age!

Are bhau...if you know konkanis from goa like those in my family, you would see that fiśh is our life! Literally, my other grandma eats "sukhi Masli" , fish eyes and doesn't stop at that...venison etc was a common sight after hunts(even though I detest the concept of trophy hunting).
Also most gsb's became traders by circumstance not by choice based on what I've heard....else we are essentially agriculturist s as well, at least based on our lands in Oras which we left behind for cities...

And yes, intermarriage was uncommon and my grandparents were definitely forward in thier love marriage...but I do think that practices and eating habits being similar, they were able to accommodate easily...hence the "similar" remark I made.

I can get the gist of someone speaking Konkani around me, but wouldn't be able to communicate...
My spoken Marathi and Hindi are strong, but reading has become weaker over the years....English unfortunately has become the language I speak most as an element of my environment. But I don't waste any time "Jeeb Saaf karnyat", when the opportunity presents itself!

As I said... GSBs you find around our neck of the woods are predominantly vegetarians, but not strictly. In social strata you would find them one layer below to pure Brahmans.. & they like to associate themselves more with pure Brahmins rather than people from lower rung. Now.. I'm not making this claim in general, just specific to tulunadu, where bunts hail from.

my roommate was practicing yoga and was follower of sathya sai baba. he used to watch his videos and i liked the sound of the language very much. actually i loved it though i have tons of books on other dravidian languages like kannada, tamil, malayalam etc. i have only 1 book on telugu named parlons télougou which misses its first 100 pages hope i answered your question
