Well done India !

How do layoffs = unsuccessful overall story?

You do realise why Tata acquired Corus in the first place?

More companies will retreat further into their niches and core relative advantages as Chinese overproduction continues.

Yes yes massive layoff has just topped of a glorious investment decision.... Tata knew the global market condition and the state of British steel when they bought it and obviously everything has gone according to plan.

Typical South Asian bluster and bombast. There is some but blown out of proportion. Only significant because overall the country is apallingly poor in natural resources. Bit looks lot when you have nothing.

In my back garden there is a small stream with rusty red colour because in this area there is large traces of hematite. Well if I was in Pakistan I would probably be bragging about having "iron resources" in my garden and claim that some Chinese company is interested in mining it.

The truth is what Pakistan has is is very poor quality. Take the case of coal that they talk so much about found recently in Sindh. It's rubbish. It has such high moisture content and low methane content that it is similar to the "iron" in my garden. To extract the coal, remove the moisture etc is very expensive.

It can certainly be done but it is no match to say Indian coal or the even better Australian coal which has very, very high methane content. That is why our friend of the "higher and deeper love" China buys coal from Australia and not from Pakistan.

Not really atanz Sb... Being a native of balochistan and having the opportunity to visit mines like Reqo Deq and Sandak I can attest the fact that those mines are full o gold deposits ... One can literally see the gold particles in those rocks !

Apart from that we have semi precious stones .. Which is being exploited by local strongmen ... Illegal mining is also a big issue .. And than those stones are actually sent to India.. Cut,polished and exported as Indian gemstones !

As for the coal .. Balochistan also has coal mines Aswell as sindh .. Yes I agree that the coal isn't of the best quality but it is of the same quality as the Indian ones (just opposite sindh -- India is running coal based power plants on th same quality)...

Salt is another major area!

Oil n gas probably we do (Indians are digging it up From Sistan Balochistan)... Shale gas again..

But the major major problem Pak faces is ..
A) Corruption
B) No investment in mining technology ... And the disadvantaged contracts govt signs with western & Chinese companies and ends up getting ripped off and SC than cancels those contracts like in the case of balochistan gold mines)
C) Exploitation of workers--- Aswell as using Centuries old method of blowing up mines with TNT and getting shyt!
D) Illegal mining or poaching

You want the real truth? The world badly needs Third World to lift itself out of the depths it is. We need a rainbow world. In that context China or India rising is a good thing. This will bust the one order world we live in today.

Over 5,000 year year human history one part has managed to dominate it for like 500 years and now it thinks it is superior. I am glad that by mid century this will be over.

And as regards these idiots who think "we steal their jobs" lemme give you little tale. Not long ago I noticed a terrible scratch on my car just below the door handle. One of my jealous neighbours had done it of course. You can touch me, you can even sractch me but my car. No sir. No way. So I narrowed it down to three guys. Not being able to zero in on the exact guy I scratched all three of their cars twice more than mine at the exact spot. I left a warning sign on my car. Since than nobody has dared to touch my car.

* I woke up at 3 am and went out in my undies .................. for my own version of "Zero Dark Thirty" Specials ops.

And before anybody says that left two innocents. Well ever heard of "collateral damage"?

Most honorable and smart Indians had left India. Few of them stay behind. It's a no brainier.

At most 25 million educated Indians migrated for economic reasons or otherwise. That is a drop in the bucket if you consider that our population is 1.2 billion. I was one of them who just returned back to India.

The smartest overseas Chinese have returned to China already, see those who established the companies like Tencent, Sohu, Baidu, DJI, etc. Someday, overseas Indians will return to India to help building their own country too.

The return has already started. @my2cents is one of the examples. I plan to in the short term future (and have already set up some contacts)...basically I am waiting for the groundwork to be stable from the Make in India campaign so I can see what way India can use my talent and skills best. In the mean time I also try make a strong case for India internally within the company I work for to set up a production line in India....so that it is in their heads and they will be in a good position already when the climate/finances have improved in India and globally. Maybe things will align up very well in a few years time, lets see.

Its called staying profitable.

UPDATE: Tata Steel Europe turns losses into £109-million profit | Scunthorpe Telegraph

Without Tata Steel's resources, Corus today would probably have been laying off even more workers and would probably be needing a full bail out from the UK govt just to stay afloat.

Compare this to Tata which has kept Corus afloat, offered generous packages to the laid off people (in consort with UK govt in 50/50 fashion)...and most importantly refinanced Corus debt and improved its own credit rating in the process.

At the same time Tata has gained access to niche specialized steel production technology and processes and has incorporated this in expansion back home in India.

Considering India is expanding in one year (8+ Mt) way more than what Bangladesh has produced in its entire history:

Bangladesh Raw Steel Production by Year (Thousand metric tons)

...you really should pick your criticisms better.

@Atanz

Please continue bashing India

But the fact is that even if all Pakistanis bash India
it makes no difference to India's BRAND Image and brand value

did you read my original post before mouthing off like a dumbass. where did you see any criticism of Tata? In so far as the takeover being a failure from a british perspective it has been. If you followed british press failure to protect the steel industry has lead to massive criticism of the government and if was not for the conservative government making a meal out of something called "tax credit" this would be main talking point in the country. No one in UK is congratulating Tata. Its an absolute disaster for UK.... not of Tatas making however as I quite clearly said. you make a good point about picking criticism better.... but that point is redundant when no criticism was made in the first place.

TATA came in bought British Steel cheaply or rather took over its debt, learnt the processes and will downsize or potentially leave... what has britain really gained. It is also very likely if this becomes a political hot potato that all the steel plants effected will absolutely be bailed out by the government. British interest being served has been minimal however one could argue that without tata or someone similar it would have been the public purse that would have been carrying BS to this date.

As to why you felt the need to point out Bangladesh steel production only you would know. In case you did not notice I am also British as well as being Bangladeshi and comment on issues as it relates to both countries.

India has a variety of coal to be found.

The one in East India - Bihar, Jharkhand - is of high quality coal.

In Tamil Nadu, probably the largest coal concentration we have, it is lignite. Low calorific value, high ash and moisture. It's similar to the one in Pakistan.

It can't be used directly or just by processing it.
It can be used by processing it first and then mixing this variety up with the high quality one(bihar or australia).

So, No. India is not using the same coal for running power plants. Neither can Pakistan if they want to run an efficient power plant. However they can do what we do.

However in total we have more of the low value coal than high value. Which is why India despite having so much coal has to import high quality coal as well to augment supplies. We import from Indonesia and Australia.

Apart from that we have semi precious stones .. Which is being exploited by local strongmen ... Illegal mining is also a big issue .. And than those stones are actually sent to India.. Cut,polished and exported as Indian gemstones !
Well, around 90% of the worlds gemstones are cut and polished in India. Its our largest export by value.

@Luca1 Make it 2.

Indians in general are doing very well in the US as well, especially in IT industries and in medical sector. My family Doctor is a very nice Indian Lady. In average, they have higher family income than Chinese. I would love to see they can duplicate their success in India as well.

Lack of opportunities in the past have driven lot of talented Indians to the US and UK.
But there is some improvement over last few years and much more in the future.

My job involves driving all over UK. While on the M1 I suddenly felt tired - you know the type where your eyes start closing and you go onto a trance. So I got off the motorway at next available junction for Rotherham ( a crappy northen English town ) and once off parked on a side road. I closed my eyes to have a nap.

When I woke up and opened my eyes what did I see staring at me from across the road? A huge stylized sign spelling "TATA STEEL". I must admit for some reason I felt good about that sign. Maybe because the thought of all those racist bigots ( Rotherham has a repuation ) working for Indian company. Jamshedpur was making it's mark in Rotherham.

So well done India.

Ps. I spend 99% of my time bashing India. This is the other 1%.

hmm..

Please don't try this 1% thing again. It is better if you stick to your 99% stuff, no fun otherwise. You have already defined a kind of niche for yourself, and should keep at it. Gives us a chance to have a hearty laugh.

We know what Tata or the other India conglomerates are, don't need a typical Pakistani like you to tell us about that.

We all have two sides. Agreeable and disagreeable. Tell me is it not better to vent on cyberspace then real life. Sort of catharsis. Similar to how the most civilized and law abiding Japanese will buy and read hideous Manga comics.

And not so much Skin heads but above average concentration of what you might call underclass or "trailer trash" to use the American version. No work, fat, inbred, habitual drunkards shagging anything that moves, no aspiration, don't know who the dad was or in some cases even who the mum was and think they hold UK up on their shoulders. When the reality is they are a drag on it like chute behind a jet.

Worse is they meet their exact opposites British Pakistani's next door to them. Only delete the drunkards with religion. The result of the two equally repugnant worlds colliding is trouble and headlines.

That is the most literary piece on Real life Philosophy I have read on this forum. Reminds me of a book, a collection of stories actually. "Unaccustomed earth". Its actually somewhat based on desi identity clashes in foreign lands. you may like it.
