My job involves driving all over UK. While on the M1 I suddenly felt tired - you know the type where your eyes start closing and you go onto a trance. So I got off the motorway at next available junction for Rotherham ( a crappy northen English town ) and once off parked on a side road. I closed my eyes to have a nap.

When I woke up and opened my eyes what did I see staring at me from across the road? A huge stylized sign spelling "TATA STEEL". I must admit for some reason I felt good about that sign. Maybe because the thought of all those racist bigots ( Rotherham has a repuation ) working for Indian company. Jamshedpur was making it's mark in Rotherham.

So well done India.

Ps. I spend 99% of my time bashing India. This is the other 1%.

TATA Steel is actually subsidiary of the TATA group, within India itself.

There has been a big growth, expension in the Indian private sector after the economic liberation of the early 90s. TATAs being a prime example.

These are Indian elites. Not just in monetary terms but also intellectual. Their best brains all choose to migrate to the States because... lets be honest, who wouldn't. China does much better in that regard I guess....not that I am saying that you aren't any good lol.

TATA is everywhere in the UK- look on the back of the UK's best selling tea-Tetley (part of TATA group) and Jaguar Land Rover are all part of the group.

@Atanz you sound like a decent guy. but when you dis the UK especially the north(where I'm from) then we have a problem.
if you don't like the north, then don't come here. i hope your job involves you driving from cornwall to dunnet head. make sure to take a blanket and plenty of redbull with you.

India's Steel output continues to grow. This year we will surpass the US in steel output, a trend seen every month so far this year. We currently produce ~7.5MT a month. Japan (no. 2) produces 8.5-9MT a month. We should overtake them in a couple years time.

2013: 81MT
2012: 77MT

Next step is to address production of high quality niche steel for automobiles and shipbuilding which is often still imported.

So we should soon be 2nd place during 1st Modi term. Then it should be an interesting dynamic between Indian production and Chinese overcapacity imho.

Yup, we should not be blinded of just achieving ranks, but we need to dig deeper to look at per capita consumption....and also what type of steel is being produced for the most part (its mostly generic mild carbon for construction).

We still have a long way to go to compete with most of the major Steel producers when we factor in our population.

But this is a welcome growth nonetheless given the stagnation that was happening earlier.

Indeed, some more substance to the "Modi effect"- the biggest year on year increase in output in in the past decade is not something to be overlooked especially when you see that the 2013-14 jump was very very modest.

You do realise why Tata acquired Corus in the first place?

More companies will retreat further into their niches and core relative advantages as Chinese overproduction continues.
