After a terrorist attack on the Kunming Railway Station, which killed 29, was carried out by extremist Xinjiang separatists, some people have expressed fearful and derogatory statements about Xinjiang people and Uyghurs. Weibo users of different ethnic groups from Xinjiang are pushing back, urging their countrymen to stand against the stereotyping of Xinjiang people.

Living in the big family that is China, although many people have many misunderstandings, I still feel happy/blessed being with everybody.

Suddenly, one day

A group of horrible people came. They did a very bloody, and very horrible thing to my friends and brothers. Blood flowed like a river, as tens of thousands of people wailed.

And I, don’t know what to do.

I see people are hurt, I see that they are in tears. I know my heart aches so much that I can’t even speak.

Turns out, they have mistaken me, mistaken me as also a terrorist.

As much a China can compete on the technological front, Chinese authorities have shown themselves to be utterly inept in the propaganda wars.

The global drubbing that China receives by the West is evidence of how pathetically clueless China is in the media front. The West is setting the tone of the conversation, not just around the world, but within China itself -- from Xinjiang to Hong Kong.

This is a consequence of the political structure: in an authoritarian environment, the leaders can use authority to force their point of view but, in a democracy, the leaders need to develop skills of persuasion, diversion and manipulation on the masses.

Authoritarian regimes haven't got the faintest chance to compete against democratic spinmeisters when it comes to manipulating public opinion.
