Waqar reveals Pakistan’s cricket problems

Pakistan former captain Waqar Younis has said that the departure of international cricket from Pakistan has taken its toll on the country’s cricket.

“We have struggled for the last ten years now, that cricket has not been played in our country, so that’s a big loss,” said Younis, while talking to OSN Sports.

The former Pakistan coach was of the view that playing in UAE- Pakistan cricket adopted home after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, was not bearing fruit as the Pakistani youth misses out on the opportunity on seeing their heroes performing ‘in front of them.’

“It doesn’t matter how much cricket you play here in (UAE) it leaves a big affect back home, the kids growing up don’t watch their heroes playing in front of them, so it is affecting us.”

Waqar Younis however, expressed optimism over the coming of Pakistan Super League (PSL) back to Pakistan, and believed that things will get better for Pakistan cricket in the near future.

“Hopefully, the PSL going back to Pakistan, hopefully we will have few more games, and things will start getting better.”

There is nothing to reveal Pakistani team has no talent. Tell me where are bowlers with 90+ and avg below 23? Where are batsman averaging 40+ and in the same time having 90+ strike rate? Where are spinners with below 27 avg and below 4 economy rate? Name me hitters who can make 100+ runs in last 10 overs? Admit it there is nothing wrong with board or anything else its just that there is no talent.

There was a time when many young cricketers used to come in from domestic cricket from Pakistan. They were quite impressive. Now it seems that Old cricketers have retired but no impressive young cricketer is coming in. Pakistan need to play a lots of domestic cricket to get the hidden talent out.

No it wasnt. It was a boring match, in fact it was the most boring and one sided match in the whole tournament. Few days before the match there was a bomb blast in lahore and people who were even living in lahore were afraid to go out of houses and we accept other players to come to our country and play.

It not just the game or talent. the fact is younger generations of pak don't see a future in cricket, no money, no exposure and lack of recognition is driving Pakistan cricket into hell. Soon we may see Bangladesh taking over Pakistan in the top 10 and Pakistan slipping down to the likes of UAE, Holland, Scotland who are just seen as practice teams meant to increase no of teams in world cup.

PCB is to blame as well. Picking Wahab Riaz, not selecting Salman Butt, Junaid Khan not playing, The Sharjeel Khan witch hunt. If Khalid Latif and Sharjeel (two talented big hitters), junaid khan and Salman butt played it would've been a different game.

Pakistans best players are not even playing yet we expect them to compete. Lol plain stupidity. PCB is run by people who don't know anything about cricket. Najam Sethi needs to step down immediately before he causes anymore damage.

Its just an excuse to cover up their own mischiefs and faults.

They dont pick the right team, they have siyasi players in the team who r not selected on merit by their good chals and they keep playing those fking siyasat in the game and leave the team with pathetic players. coz quality players r not allowed to pop up. this whole structure of PCB needs to b changed. Change the chairman with a proper merit based selection and you'll see the results once top management is clean.

Now a player like KAMRAN AKMAL can spend a lifetime in international team while he was the biggest catch dropper ever. Then an UMAR AKMAL was tried to b proved as a AB DEVILLIARS for our Nation by statements while he never performed and now we have Wahab Riaz who according to the selectors is the baap of Shoaib Akhtar/allan Donald/Mc Grath/ dennis lilly etc...

And Then you have Muhammad Hafeez the best batsman ever born on this planet. ever reliable... Amla, Kohli, Kallis are all kids to this guy..

Pick the right players and you'll see the team do well. It's not lack of talent or interests it's mismanagement. People who are running PCB don't know anything about cricket selection process. To me it's not something difficulty to fix at all. This should be quite easy.

This is really inapprpriate to use to terms like "stars" and "heroes" for these sports persons and actors etc...They are seflish people who earn more money than they deserve and still they let the nation down more often than not
Many of them are involved in corruption through spot fixing, match fixing and gambling and what not.

Heroes are people like Abdul Sattar Edhi, Dr AQ Khan, the soldiers who lay their lives so we can sleep safely in our homes...

No cricket at home is a big factor but it can't justify lack of talent problem.Dav whatmore enjoyed tournaments in Pakistan during his tenure as Pakistan head coach.he is the one who spotted junaid Khan.problem is mickey Arthur is not interested watching domestic games and sarfaraz now have couple of best friends including wahab riaz.selection of players was purely based on PSL and not on domestic cricket top players.imram khan is one of the best talent but he always play test cricket.no odi matches for him.sohail khan was dropped for no reason.there is no lack of talent. Problem is here in PCB,we are doing injustice in every department, even sarfaraz now taking sides of his best friends in the team.a disease can affect your system.Ahmed shehzad,umar akmal,wahab riaz,imad waseem,Babar azam(overrated),they are all diseases to Pakistan cricket.there are some good players who can build this team but again selection is a problem. Names of some talented players are Hammad azam,Harris sohail,sohail khan,imran khan,umar gul,Muhammad sami and I am sure some of our under 19 players will make it into the squad if chances are provided.selection of inzamam was utterly disgraceful.

I agree. The statement that Pakistan has a lot of talent is nothing but a cliche resulting from our habit of massaging our egos all the time.

Pakistanis have a habit of finding some scapegoat to blame. These days, it is Najam Sethi and PCB. The harsh reality is that there is nothing that PCB can do.
