I actually don't think he's a Russian drone or anything - at least not consciously. Had he been so, he'd have been a lot more subtle.

I think he represents the state of the US after they got three decades of being the sole superpower. Without external threats, the US started to rot fast. Trump is a manifestation of that rot.

There are countless conflicting interests at play in the upper echelons of US power - and many are motivated by personal and corporate greed than patriotic pride.
