The U.S. is setting up observation posts along the Turkish border in northern Syria, Defense Chief James Mattis said on Nov. 21.

Turkey has “legitimate” concerns about terror threats in Syria and the U.S. does not dismiss any of its concerns, he told reporters at the Pentagon.

“We are putting in OPs [observation posts] up in northern Syria, this is a change now. We are putting in observation posts in several locations up along the Syria border,” Mattis said.

“We want to be the people to call the Turks and warn them if we see something coming out of an area that we’re operating in,” he added.

The U.S. is consulting “closely” with the Turkish military and the State Department, said the defense chief.

“We are going to track any threat that we can spot going up into Turkey. That means we will be talking to Turkey’s military across the border,” added Mattis.

Mattis also said that the observation posts would not require additional U.S. troops being sent to Syria. The Pentagon says it has about 2,000 troops in Syria.

The United States has long been complained that tensions between Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which includes the YPG militants, have at times slowed down progress on fighting the ISIL.

Turkey deems the YPG as an offshoot of the PKK, which is listed a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union.

So,in other words,

Protection for the YPG/PKK in Syria.
Are we that dumb that we accept this?

. .
Do you have any other choice? US does what it wants...
Yes we have, this is the time to give them an ultimatum.
YPG/PKK out or else.
Accepting this only means that we are ok with the YPG ruling Northern Syria.
What else can you expect from this government, ridiculous bs.

. . . .
in that case we should learn a thing or two from the Pakistanis (in Afghanistan) on how to successfully empower an insurgency and let them bleed

.
We dont need any U.S observation points to watch and protect our borders lol. Turkey is capable to do this by itself. The best thing the U.S can do is to gtfo that region. Nobody wants U.S there.

Do you have any other choice? US does what it wants...

Familiar brains said this about the Operation Firat Shield and Olive Branch to. Turkey cant do this and cant do that. What did Turkey? You tell me you little **** what did Turkey??!!

They showed serious interest in them I think last year. From last year till now SDF is receiving big support from the UAE and the Saudis. For some time now there is even a information about possible UAE and Saudi military force stationed in Northeast Syria.

Turkey unfortunately is surrounded by enemies

Its allies are far away and its friends locked in their own problems

Turkey needs to modernise in a hurry, and for that it needs some key achievements in the next few years

The source of all the current problems lies in the past. They brought this situation knowingly. They played with the psychics of the nation from the 80's till now but I hope that soon the situation will start to improve. Even with all the gaps and weaknesses Turkey have in the moment its undeniable that Turkey still is capable of delivering heavy blows to its enemies. As we showed in Cyprus, as we showed in the Gulf, in Africa, Sinjar, Al Bab and Afrin I hope that we will show it also on the Eastern side of the Euphrates.
