Why did China give up trying to retake the island and let the US government sell them arms like F-16s so when your military flies close by you simply live with the threats of being shot down.

Meanwhile US fighters simply land and get handshakes from the Taiwanese.

In 2012, the US aircraft carrier confronted the Chinese navy in the Taiwan Strait.

After 2016, China began to patrol Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone, but still did not enter Taiwan's airspace.
