Pak Army not receiving $1bn per year for participation in war on terror: Spokesman

RAWALPINDI: Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Wednesday debunked media reports and clarified that Pakistan Army has not received US $ 1 billion per year for participation in war on terror as has been reported.

Spokesman of ISPR has strong contradicted remarks and opinions voiced by the anchor and participants during the program Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath that Pakistan Army receives US $ 1 billion per year on account of participation in Global War on Terrorism from USA and there is no accountability of this funding.

He stated that Pakistan Army does not get any reimbursement/financial support directly from any foreign country.

He said that whatever support is being given to Pakistan is provided to the Government of Pakistan.

He underlined that Pak Army like other institutions/establishments of the state requests the Government of Pakistan for assistance and financial support as per its requirements through a well institutional frame work which is totally transparent and its expenditures are subjected to checks and audit as part of the system.

Army doesn’t directly receive funds from US: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army has not directly received $1 billion a year from the US for participation in the ‘war on terror’, Online quoted an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesman as saying on Wednesday. The ISPR spokesman rejected a media report discussed on Geo television’s ‘Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath’ programme that the army was receiving $1 billion a year from the US and that there was no accountability of this funding. The spokesman said the Pakistan Army was not getting any reimbursement or financial support directly from any country. “The army, like all other state institutions, asks the government for financial assistance through a well institutionalised and transparent framework and all its expenditures are subject to checks and audit,” the spokesman added.

Daily Times Monitor adds: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Mahmood Ali Durrani said that Pakistan was just a ‘shopkeeper’ and that the money received from the US was spent only on services for the US. Commenting on a New York Times report that Pakistan was receiving $1 billion annually from the US for its cooperation in the ‘war on terrorism’, Durrani told Voice of America that he had to face problems in Washington instead of cooperation because the media had created a very negative impression of Pakistan. Commenting on the current situation in Pakistan, Durrani said that President Pervez Musharraf’s position had weakened.
