U.S. drones kill four militants in Pakistan's Waziristan

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan | Tue Jul 5, 2011 3:51pm EDT

(Reuters) - Two U.S. drone aircraft fired three missiles into a house in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on the Afghan border on Tuesday, killing at least four militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The drone strike took place in Mir Ali town, 24 km (15 miles) east of the region's main town of Miranshah.

"The house has been completely destroyed. Militants have cordoned off the area and are removing bodies from rubble," a local intelligence official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters adding that four militants were killed in the strike.

It was not possible to verify the deaths independently. Militants often dispute official casualty tolls.

U.S. now believes Qaeda leader Kashmiri is dead

Thu Jul 7, 2011 4:31pm GMT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. counter-terrorism agencies have concluded that a senior al Qaeda leader implicated in terrorist plots in South Asia and Europe is dead, a U.S. official said, following weeks of conflicting reports on his fate.

Pakistani officials said last month that Ilyas Kashmiri, an alleged leader of both al Qaeda and one of its Pakistan-based affiliates, had been killed by a drone-borne U.S. missile strike on a target in north-western Pakistan.

Media reports quoted a commander of Harakat-ul Jihad Islami (HUJI), the local group with which Kashmiri allegedly was affiliated, confirming his death.

But when these reports first surfaced, U.S. officials said they could not confirm that Kashmiri had been killed. They noted that in September 2009 Kashmiri also had been reported to have been killed in a drone strike, which turned out to be untrue.

A senior U.S. official said that in the weeks since the most recent disputed report of Kashmiri's death, U.S. agencies had confirmed to their satisfaction that Kashmiri is dead. The official declined to elaborate on what kind of evidence the United States had acquired confirming his demise.

Kashmiri, said to be a former Pakistani military officer, reportedly was on a list Washington gave to Pakistan of militants the United States wanted captured or killed, a Pakistani official told Reuters.

The U.S. State Department offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his location, describing him as the commander of HUJI, which launched several attacks in India and Pakistan, including a March 2006 suicide bombing of the U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan. Four people, including an American diplomat, were killed.

Kashmiri also was under indictment in the United States for allegedly plotting to attack a newspaper in Denmark.

Pakistan: U.S. drone kills 12 suspected militants

By Rasool Dawar, Associated Press, 2:48 p.m., Monday, July 11, 201

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A suspected U.S. drone fired missiles at a house in northwestern Pakistan very close to the Afghan border Monday, killing 12 alleged militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The attack came a day after the Obama administration announced it was suspending $800 million in military aid to Pakistan because of strained ties. Monday’s strike indicates the White House has no intention of stopping a program that increasingly has caused tension between the two countries.

US drone strike kills 10 militants in Pakistan

By Hasbanullah Khan (AFP) – 9 hours ago

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan — A US drone strike targeting a compound in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt on the Afghan border on Monday killed at least 10 militants, local security officials said.

Two unmanned aircraft fired four missiles, hitting the compound and a vehicle parked in the Gorwaik area of Datta Khel town, 45 kilometres (28 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district, a senior official based in Peshawar, the regional capital told AFP.

"Two missiles struck the compound and another two hit a vehicle," the official said. "At least 10 militants were killed in this American drone attack."

A second security official based in Miranshah confirmed the death toll.

Both officials said the number of casualties could rise as the area of the drone strike had been completely destroyed.

Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants have carved out strongholds in the northwest where they are said to have plotted attacks on Pakistani, Afghan and Western targets.

A total of 20 US drone strikes have now been reported in Pakistan's tribal belt since US commandos found and killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in a unilateral airborne raid on the Pakistani garrison city of Abbottabad on May 2.

Officials said that all those killed in Monday's strike were local militants.

US drone strikes kill 48 suspected militants in Waziristan region

Reuters (2 hours ago) Today

PESHAWAR: At least 48 suspected militants were killed by missiles launched by US drone aircraft in Pakistan’s northwest, local intelligence officials said on Tuesday, one of the largest death tolls to date in the controversial air bombing campaign.

Coming a day after Washington announced an $800 million delay in military assistance amid worsening US-Pakistan ties, the attacks could exacerbate tension between the two uneasy allies in the war against militants.

The attacks started on Monday night, when remotely piloted drones fired nine missiles into a militant compound and at a vehicle in North Waziristan, killing 25 suspected insurgents, local intelligence officials said.

Another strike hours later in South Waziristan killed five suspected militants. Then on Tuesday morning, a drone fired two missiles at another compound in North Waziristan.

“The missiles were fired as militants sitting in a vehicle were entering into a house used by them as a hideout,” an intelligence official said, adding that 15 militants were killed in the strike. “The house is on fire.”

Three militants were killed in another strike in the same region. There was no independent confirmation of the death tolls, and militants often dispute official death figures.

It was the second-largest death toll in a day in the unacknowledged US drone campaign against militants in Pakistan’s northwest.

U.S. unleashes its drones in Pak's border; 45 killed

Submitted 3 hrs 10 mins ago

At least 45 terrorists were killed in Pakistan's restive northwest in one of the deadliest strikes by US drones, signalling Washington's resolve to step up assault on terror groups in this country despite growing strains in ties with its key ally. The unusually heavy barrage of three missile strikes in a span of 12 hours, targeting militant hideouts in north and south Waziristan took one of the largest death toll in the controversial unacknowledged air campaign. The drone attacks commenced on Monday night when unmanned aircraft unleashed nine missiles into a suspected militant compound and a vehicle in north Waziristan, killing 25 terrorists, local officials were quoted by TV channels as saying. Few hours later, the drone struck again in nearby South Waziristan firing missiles and killing five terrorists. The drones reappeared early this morning over the area firing two missiles at another compound in North Waziristan killing 15 terrorists. It was the second largest death toll in drone campaign.

Deadly drone attacks kill 61 in 24 hours Foreign, Punjabi militants among dead

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

MIRAMSHAH/WANA: Twenty-four more people, including local and foreign militants, were killed and nine others injured in three separate drone attacks in South Waziristan and North Waziristan on Tuesday. Some news agencies and private television channels reported that the death toll in the drone strikes during the last 24 hours had reached 61.

Tribal sources in South and North Waziristan, where the government in the past signed peace accords with local Taliban leaders and tribes, reported an unprecedented rise in flights by the US spy planes. Official and tribal sources said in the first attack, a drone fired seven missiles at suspected hideouts of militants in the Malik Shahi village in Birmal Tehsil of South Waziristan near the border with Afghanistan’s Paktika province.

Eight people, mostly local and foreign militants, were killed in the attack. Tribal sources said the drone pounded a house where a group of Punjabi Taliban and tribal fighters were residing. There were also reports that some foreign fighters were among the dead and wounded. Tribal sources said some Arab nationals were present in the house during the attack. There was no immediate information about the nationality of the foreign militants.

Another 16 people, some of them stated to be tribal militants, were killed and nine others injured in two different missile attacks by the CIA-operated US drones in North Waziristan. Tribal sources said a drone fired six missiles, hitting a house in Dre Nishtar area in the mountainous Shawal valley in North Waziristan. There were reports that a group of tribal militants was staying in the house.

A house and two double-cabin pickup trucks were reportedly destroyed while another house located near the suspected compound of the militants was partially damaged in the attack. Tribesmen claimed that local villagers were killed and injured in the attack in Shawal valley.

In another attack, a drone fired two missiles, hitting a car in the Neway Adda village of Dattakhel area near the Afghan border. Both official and tribal sources said a local villager driving his personal car came under drone attack. Villagers said only body parts of the tribesman were collected from the spot of the attack.

This was the fourth attack during the past 24 hours by US spy planes in Pakistan’s tribal areas. Earlier, US drones on Monday night fired 12 missiles at two houses and killed 25 militants in the Gorweek area of North Waziristan near the Afghan border. Pakistani security officials and Taliban sources said the drones had fired 12 missiles at a large compound and two pickup trucks, reportedly used by the Afghan Taliban and their foreign guest fighters.

it really makes me angry that the Pakistani Goverment allow this, I bet 90% of them are just innocent people.
I wonder how much is US paying Pakistan for this?

It would not be surprising if it is found that for each US missile strike in Pakistan the government is paid $ by US under the table.

Way to go dear politicians keep up the good work for the better of the country and the people.

US Predators kill 4 'militants' in South Waziristan strike

By Bill Roggio, August 1, 2011

US Predators struck for the first time in 19 days in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agencies today, killing four "militants" in an attack in South Waziristan.

The unmanned Predators or the more deadly Reapers fired two missiles at a compound in the Azam Warzak area of South Waziristan, according to AFP.

No senior commanders from the Taliban, al Qaeda, or allied terror groups based in the area are reported to have been killed.

Today's attack in South Waziristan took place in an area of South Waziristan that is controlled by Mullah Nazir, the leader of the Taliban in the Waziri tribal areas. Azam Warzak is on the border with Afghanistan, and is a transit point for Taliban, al Qaeda, and other terrorists heading to and from Pakistan's war-torn neighbor. Senior al Qaeda leaders are also thought to shelter in Azam Warzak.

Kashmiri faked death: Indian intelligence

By Bill Roggio, July 30, 2011 9:46 AM

Left: a purported photograph of Ilyas Kashmiri after his death. The picture is actually that of Abu Dera Ismael Khan, a Lashkar-e-Taiba fighter who was a member of the suicide assault team that attacked Mumbai, India, in November 2008. Right: Ilyas Kashmiri before his death. The image on the left is published courtesy of the SITE Intelligence Group.

The Asia Times has an interesting update that supports the theory that senior al Qaeda and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami leader Ilyas Kashmiri is alive. Indian officials believe Kashmiri may have faked his death to allow him to slip under the radar of US intelligence, which is actively pursuing him via Predator and Reaper strike aircraft in Pakistan's tribal areas.

Interestingly, the Indian list of most wanted people also carries the name of Ilyas Kashmiri, who is believed to have been killed in a US drone attack that targeted his hideout in Gowakha village of the Wana area in the South Waziristan tribal area on June 3.

However, Indian authorities believe that true to his reputation of a survivor, Kashmiri might have escaped death once again...

The indications are that Kashmiri intentionally floated the news of his death in a drone attack to avoid the heat following the killing of Bin Laden in Pakistan. His role in the Mumbai terror plot is unclear, but as per his own claims he was the one who thought of such a plan, which was eventually hijacked.
