US defence secretary-elect terms Pakistan 'essential partner'

usa, India strategic interests started to merge in days,of Clinton. The USA saw,the need to have a strong India in their desire contain China and keep India Ocean firmly under usa grip . indian and usa interests, converge deeply . took decades,to manifest by several presidents.
your incredibly short sighted and overly optimistic if you think one single weapons deal would be allowed too undo decades of work.
usa India Japan Australia is here to stay .
s400 purchase will.not stop.that
India politicians are veterans we have good influential indian origin American politicians in white house to ensure no major problems.
American equipment will continue to arrive
and India will remain a major ally of all.western nations and indeed Russia too

You talk so much utter rubbish, it's like you crap out of your mouth.

Indian Americans in the Dem party have been some of India's toughest crtics, especially on Kashmir and human rights.

I now you seem desperate to paint every development as good for India but time to wake up and smell the coffee. CAATSA on the way, Kashmir issue a big one for Dems and a US President who knows Pakistan very well and sponsored a Pro Pakistan aid bill. A US Sec Def who has great relations with senior Pak Mil

Of course US will act in it's interests but Dems have no love for BJP, that is a certain. Think everyone forget this easily?

It's not in pak interest to flirt with USA..

We don't need to be enemies and we absolutely don't need to be their friends

don't hold your breath for f16 you will.get lectures on do more about your proxy terror groups . then will.gi e economic aid package insurgency fighting hardware

when you ask for f16 and stand off weapons the usa will say what for we are not armi g to start a war with our ally India

You really have no clue do you? No idea whatsoever. You think of the most positive outcome for India in your head and claim it a reality, it's like news and facts do not touch your world.

Time to stop wasting my time educating you

Geopoltically if US reapproaches with China and becomes more anti-Russian, you can expect Indian foreign and defence policy to be screwed for next few years.

1) US more keen on China trade and lukewarm support for India
2) CAATSA sanctions
3) Made enemies of China (world's largest economy in 5 years)
4) US Mil aid to Pak
5) More US noise on Kashmir/.Human rights

I would say it could potentially be very bad for India

Those would be very much **possibilities** but the issue is that, with all due respects, Russia is a dud global power whose main prestige being the ability to blow up the world on about same scale as America. So, no, it will be China. And, also, America NEEDS enemies. It can't be normal country. It will always need some very powerful enemy. Why? Because a chunk of the country is dependent upon war profiteering.

If all the countries in the world one day magically decide to get along the war machine in America would invent a Martian Invasion to keep the pot boiling!

When US develops any partnership with India, it is India falling to the evil designs of the US. It becomes India lying face down to US. It is sale of soul to the US.

When US just gives a positive statement w.r.t Pakistan, see the dance in unison. From F-16 to stand-off weapons to what not.

I hope the soul is intact now. 😜😜

.
This is interesting, with potential CAATSA, you could see a situation of India actually being sanctioned and US Military aid to Pakistan restored. Hope everyone who wrongly claimed the old "Democrats are bad for Pak and Republicans good for Pak" now take note...
You're delusional. Have a sit down.

WASHINGTON:
US defence secretary-elect former General Lloyd Austin on Wednesday termed Pakistan 'an essential partner' in the Afghan peace process, saying he will deter regional actors from spoiling the peace of the region, in an apparent reference to arch-rivals India.

"Pakistan is an essential partner in any peace process in Afghanistan," Gen Austin said while responding to a question regarding his policy as the top defence official of the country.

He added, "If confirmed, I will encourage a regional approach that garners support from neighbors like Pakistan, while also deterring regional actors, from serving as spoilers to the Afghanistan peace process."
“Pakistan will play an important role in any political settlement in Afghanistan.”

Lauding Pakistan's role in the regional peace process, Gen Austin said, "I understand Pakistan has taken constructive steps to meet US requests in support of the Afghanistan peace process. Pakistan has also taken steps against anti-Indian groups, such as Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, although this progress is incomplete."

He noted that "many factors in addition to the security assistance suspension may impact Pakistan’s cooperation, including Afghanistan negotiations and the dangerous escalation following the Pulwama attack."

The former US Central Command commander added that he would focus on shared interests between Washington and Islamabad “which include training future Pakistan military leaders through the use of International Military Education and Training funds”.

Trump had suspended Pakistan participation in the IMET program in August 2018. The US administration later resumed the facility afforded to military officers from Pakistan in December 2019.
IMET affords spaces to foreign military officers at US military education institutions, such as the US Army War College and the US Naval War College.

However, the former four-star general maintained that he “will press Pakistan” to prevent its territory from being used by militants or other violent organisations” and said he would continue to build relationships with Pakistani military to “provide openings for the United States and Pakistan to cooperate on key issues”.

On December 7, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden chose retired General Lloyd Austin, who oversaw U.S. forces in the Middle East under President Barack Obama, to be his defense secretary.

america needs Pakistan more than ever while Pakistan has nearly broken free from american influence. but the thing is that retired white generals are far too proud and egotistical to kiss brown feet so they put a retired black general in charge to kiss brown feet.

Highlighted section above is the most important one in my view.

Unlike the Trump administration that gave India a green light to do what it wanted, not expecting a Pakistani response, the incoming SoD appears to recognize that actions such as the military escalation by India (Balakot) are dangerous, counterproductive and need to be prevented.

For Pakistani policy makers, perhaps a lesson that controlled escalation in response to provocations from India, Afghanistan or Iran can be a useful tool to help apply pressure to prevent such provocations going forward.

The bin Laden incident is now almost exclusively only brought up by Indians. It is very rarely brought up by Americans.

Its been 10 years, and absolutely zero evidence, leaks or anything else linking the Pakistani State or institutions to assisting Osama Bin Laden in any way. And this has been confirmed by multiple US officials going all the way up to Obama.

At this point, even the few people that do bring it up do so as part of a pressure tactic or because they're mentally predisposed to finding someone to blame.

Yes, both Obama and Trump administrations multiple times mentioned that there was no evidence of Pakistani state protecting OBL. It's basically only brought up by Indians now to score brownie points.

A very interesting interview, very new and very relevant to this thread. Especially worth watching for Pakistan after about minute 20. The path India is following is the path of the Israelis. Take up control via the Lobbies, even to the detriment of America's own interests. Ultimately, the political blackmailing or buying politicians does and will make American political system to do the bidding of the foreign powers often at the expense of American interests. Sane elements in America know that about Israel. They will eventually know that about India too.

No sour grapes here--that's what America is setup for and Pakistan would do the same if Pakistan had this large of diaspora Pakistanis.

US foreign policy goes beyond individuals. It is baked into the institutions, the so called 'deep state/establishment'. Institutional inertia means little will change in long term US foreign policy. The US will continue to deal with Pakistan based on the benefits Pakistan can provide, and there is nothing wrong with that. It us up to the Pakistani government and the people of Pakistan to strengthen the country economically & expand the Pakistani market to where the US and other countries see a tangible economic benefit to engaging with Pakistan.

Pakistan should obviously engage with any US administration & even more with Congress & people-people engagement to help more Americans see Pakistan in a positive light. However, without an economically strong Pak, the US-Pak relationship is unlikely to change significantly.

Will Biden tamp down on the antagonistic approach of Trump with China?

Possibly, but so long as the US establishment continues to function in a Cold War mentality with a goal to contain China, India will remain a useful tool for the US to leverage, which in turn will have an impact on US policies towards Pakistan.
